Coronavirus: US passes 1,000 cases – two weeks after Trump said number would soon be 'close to zero'

The worry at this point for Democrats should be the disillusioned and truculent Sander's disciples refusing to vote as protestation. Hundreds of thousands of people voted for Sanders in Texas, Michigan, North Carolina, Virginia, Washington, Missouri and Massachusetts and Maine, a hundred thouand in South Carolina. We need those voters in November to remove Trump, not temper tantrum.

Senate Democrats, joined by a handful of Republicans, voted on Wednesday to reverse a Department of Education rule they say reduces protections for student borrowers. Senators voted 53-42 to block the rule, which was crafted by Education Secretary Betsy DeVos. Republicans said they will instruct Trump to veto the bill.

What I heard in that speech was Sanders acknowledging the writing on the wall. He essentially said it outright. That there’s an electability problem, that people want to vote for Joe.  Bernie's speech just now sounded like he was softening his supporters to the fact that he will have to drop out soon. It sounded like he put forth a bunch of ideas that he wants to see the party take on. But he's not blackmailing the party like last time because he's been blown out and knows it. The people saying he needs to drop out now need to realize that Bernie is trying to guide his base to remain locked into the election cycle and vote for the Democratic party (not simply Biden, the vote is for the entire Democratic party to take over the government, all the Democratic candidates) in November. Bernie is being smart. Problem is he did this last time, he told his voters to vote for Hillary because the Democratic party was the only party willing to legislate a progressive agenda, he endorsed Hillary's general election platform as the most leftist liberal progressive platform ever, and that platform contained parts of Sanders' then-platform, and Trump won regardless because Sanders voters voted for Trump or Gary Johnson or Jill Stein or wrote-in Sanders' name or stayed home. I also feel Joe debating Bernie prepares Joe to debate Trump. Bernie telegraphed the exact set of questions he'll force Biden to answer. It's an opportunity for Biden to court the Bernie base and unite the party. In a debate format where Bernie is operating under the pretense that he's still campaigning for president, his supporters will tune in and watch. This is an opportunity to convince them to get off the "Bernie or bust" bandwagon and join the "vote blue no matter who" bandwagon instead. "Yes, hello... it's time for me to apologize to every Sanders fan... for kicking your candidate's ass up and down the block ( and twice on Tuesdays )..." ... Those who supported Bernie did it not out of party loyalty but out of love for his ideas. Bernie just saying go vote for Biden won't be enough for everyone (most but not everyone). Bernie is giving Biden the chance in the next debate to show he will champion some of these ideas so the Bernie idealists and Bernie loyalists will support him. To re-iterate, my take is that he knows he's losing. He's asking Joe what he's going to do for progressives. He's asking Joe to make a pitch for progressives to join him. He stated that young people 18-39yrs are the future of the country, and that the DNC needs to get them on their side, and not rely solely on the votes of old people. It was an olive branch, believe it or not, he understood he wasn't going to be the nominee and is giving Biden a platform to unify the party. And Joe/Democrats should accept some of the policies at this point because old people aren’t the ones who are going to go door to door canvassing or making phone calls or buying the merchandise or pushing the platform all over social media. The millions of young people who canvassed for Bernie, Elizabeth, Beto, Kamala, Andrew, Pete, Cory, Amy, Tom Steyer, Julian, Jay, etc, and canvassed all day and part of the night for months on end, for a year on end, in Elizabeth's case two years on end, need to hear Joe champion some progressive policies. Because the youth base built the campaigns from the ground up. They made every candidate a household name. They talked to millions of Americans (voters and non-voters alike) and took note of the issues that mattered most to Americans. Please Biden and Team Biden and DNC, embrace some of those progressive proposals.

"If he goes full attack mode on Biden though": If he were going to do that, he probably wouldn't have called Joe his friend, said he believes that beating Trump is paramount, congratulated Joe on his lead in the race and generally aimed his criticisms at everyone but Joe. He didn't say a bad word about him. He just gave him a chance to answer some questions. This is an olive branch, and it could be a game changing one. This is an opportunity for Biden. If it were an attack, he'd already be shooting.

Look at the issues polling; voters first and foremost care about beating Trump, and Sanders is the only candidate whose voters regard policy ideas as roughly on par with "beating Trump" in terms of priorities. In other words, "Beating Trump" is the single largest driver of Democratic primary turnout, while policy issues are a distant second that Sanders has a lead on. Poll after poll says a large majority of Biden's voters prioritize beating Trump over policy agreements, while Sanders' voters prioritize policy agreements slightly over beating Trump. Restated: Sanders' largest appeal to his voters is his campaign platform, while Biden's largest appeal to his voters is the perception that he's most capable of beating Trump.

Republicans ordered federal health officials to treat top-level coronavirus meetings as classified, an unusual step that has restricted information and hampered the U.S. government’s response to the contagion, according to four Trump administration officials.  The officials said that dozens of classified discussions about such topics as the scope of infections, quarantines and travel restrictions have been withheld since mid-January in a high-security meeting room at the Department of Health & Human Services (HHS), a key player in the fight against the coronavirus.

A Lab Pushed for Early Tests, but Republican Officials Said NoL A Seattle lab uncovered Washington's coronavirus outbreak only after defying federal regulators | The first U.S. outbreak was in Washington state, where authorities confirmed the first patient — suffering from respiratory problems after visiting Wuhan, China — only after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention made an exception to strict testing criteria. In Seattle, Dr. Helen Chu, an infectious disease expert who was part of an ongoing flu-monitoring effort, the Seattle Flu Study, asked permission to test their trove of collected flu swabs for coronavirus. State health officials joined Chu in asking the CDC and Food and Drug Administration to waive privacy rules and allow clinical tests in a research lab, citing the threat of significant loss of life. The CDC and FDA said no. "We felt like we were sitting, waiting for the pandemic to emerge," Chu told the Times. "We could help. We couldn't do anything." They held off for a couple of weeks, but on Feb. 25, Chu and her colleagues "began performing coronavirus tests, without government approval," the Times reports. They found a positive case pretty quickly, and after discussing the ethics, they told state health officials, who confirmed the next day that a teenager who hadn't traveled abroad had COVID-19 — and the virus had likely been spreading undetected throughout the Seattle area for weeks. Later that day, the CDC and FDA told Chu and her colleagues to stop testing, then partially relented, and the lab found several more cases. On Monday night, they were ordered to stop testing again.

"There's a generational divide in the Democratic Party on health care, on climate change, on foreign policy," she said, adding that the left should "leverage" support for bold policies to influence mainstream Democratic politics. Ocasio-Cortez, who endorsed Sanders in October and has campaigned with him across the country, urged her supporters not to lose hope in electoral politics. "Never, ever, ever let your heart turn black," she said, echoing a case she's made for years against cynicism among young people. | "I want to level with all of you, I'm not a person that aspires to a position, I aspire to a mission," she said. "We can't swing from one savior to another. There's a lot of savior-ism in politics, like 'Who's next?' and 'Who's gonna save us?' And the answer is you. The answer is people."

The Trump Organization paid bribes, through middlemen, to New York City tax assessors to lower its property tax bills for several Manhattan buildings in the 1980s and 1990s, according to five former tax assessors and city employees as well as a former Trump Organization employee. Two of the five city employees said they personally took bribes to lower the assessment on a Trump property; the other three said they had indirect knowledge of the payments. The city employees were among 18 indicted in 2002 for taking bribes in exchange for lowering the valuations of properties, which in turn reduced the taxes owed for the buildings. All of the 18 eventually pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Manhattan except for one, who died before his case was resolved.

Stop corporations from profiteering off of incarceration. Biden will end the federal government’s use of private prisons, building off an Obama-Biden Administration’s policy rescinded by the Trump Administration. And, he will make clear that the federal government should not use private facilities for any detention, including detention of undocumented immigrants. Biden will also make eliminating private prisons and all other methods of profiteering off of incarceration – including diversion programs, commercial bail, and electronic monitoring – a requirement for his new state and local prevention grant program. Finally, Biden will support the passage of legislation to crack down on the practice of private companies charging incarcerated individuals and their families outrageously high fees to make calls.

Decriminalize the use of cannabis and automatically expunge all prior cannabis use convictions. Biden believes no one should be in jail because of cannabis use. As president, he will decriminalize cannabis use and automatically expunge prior convictions. And, he will support the legalization of cannabis for medical purposes, leave decisions regarding legalization for recreational use up to the states, and reschedule cannabis as a schedule II drug so researchers can study its positive and negative impacts. End all incarceration for drug use alone and instead divert individuals to drug courts and treatment. Biden believes that no one should be imprisoned for the use of illegal drugs alone. Instead, Biden will require federal courts to divert these individuals to drug courts so they receive treatment to address their substance use disorder. He’ll incentivize states to put the same requirements in place. And, he’ll expand funding for federal, state, and local drug courts.

Joe is more progressive than you think. His platform isn't as radical as Bernie's, but it is a progressive one. To the "progressive" camp, the Trump presidency represents a crisis that can be halted and reversed only with the boldest, most sweeping changes in US policy. The "moderate" camp, by contrast, believes that the only way to beat Trump is with a candidate who can appeal to more than just hardcore Democrats — who can reach independents and even some centrist Republicans with a program that eschews radical excess, appeals to the sober mainstream, and holds out the promise, in a famous phrase from American presidential history, of a return to normalcy.

To hear some leftists tell it, Biden is not only moderate, but intolerably so. When, at one progressive conference, he was described as seeking "middle ground" on climate policy, Democratic firebrand Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was contemptuous: "I will be damned if the same politicians who refused to act come back today and say we need a middle-of-the-road approach to save our lives."

Biden may seem hopelessly accommodationist to those on the Democratic Party's leftmost fringe. But in reality, he is running on a platform far more progressive — i.e., far less moderate — than any Democratic presidential nominee in history.

One of Biden's foremost selling points is the eight years he spent as vice president in the last Democratic administration. In St. Louis over the weekend, he spooneristically proclaimed himself an "O'Biden-Bama Democrat." If Biden wins the nomination, he can count on robust support from Obama, perhaps the most beloved figure within the Democratic Party today.

Yet on issue after issue, Biden has veered sharply from Obama's path.

On health insurance, for example, Obama rejected a public option as part of the Affordable Care Act and repeatedly stressed the importance of maintaining private coverage. But Biden favors a public option open to everyone, including the majority of Americans with employer-sponsored health coverage.

Biden supports government-funded health care even for unauthoritzed immigrants, something Obama never came close to proposing. He supports a sharp increase in US refugee admissions and a path to citizenship for all undocumented immigrants. When Obama ran for the White House in 2008, by contrast, it was as an enforcement-first hard-liner. He cracked down so hard on those who crossed the border illegally, he was known for much of his presidency as the "deporter-in-chief."

No Democratic presidential nominee ever endorsed anything like the radical Green New Deal, with its price tag in the tens of trillions of dollars and its goal of eliminating the use of all fossil fuels. But Biden does. No Democratic nominee ever called for a national minimum wage of $15 an hour. But Biden does. The former vice president has moved emphatically leftward on abortion, on the death penalty, on free trade. By any understanding of "moderate," as that term was used when Obama or Bill Clinton was president, Biden is no moderate.

What Biden is today is what he has always been: a liberal Democrat. But as his party has shifted left in a hyperpolarized era, Biden has shifted with it. Many of the positions he takes that are described as centrist today, observed Axios in January, "would have been liberal dreams during the Bill Clinton years and still out of reach in the Obama era." On policy, Biden is a moderate primarily in the sense that he embraces positions that most Democrats no longer fight over.

All of which means that even if Biden wins the Democratic nomination, progressive Democrats will have reason to rejoice. Their party's standard-bearer will be someone whose platform skews further to the left than any major party platform in the past. Hillary's was the last most liberal progressive platform , Biden's is the current most liberal progressive platform. Sanders may not end up on the November ballot, but it will unmistakably reflect his influence. For he and his band of progressives have pushed their party to the left with such success that even the "moderate" in the race would be the most liberal Democrat ever nominated for president.

Joe Biden’s presidential campaign announced Wednesday it is forming a "Public Health Advisory Committee" to advise on steps that Biden, his staff and his supporters can take to reduce the threat to reduce the threat of the novel coronavirus, which causes COVID-19. The panel, made up of six doctors and former government officials, will “provide science-based, expert advice regarding steps the campaign should take to minimize health risks for the candidate, staff, and supporters,” the former vice president’s campaign said.  “The campaign’s top priority is and will continue to be the health and safety of the public.”

The first U.S. layoffs from the coronavirus are here | Job losses have begun in ports, bakeries and travel agencies. Economists worry more layoffs are coming as businesses see plummeting sales. Hundreds of Americans lost jobs this week as the coronavirus outbreak has taken a toll on the U.S. economy and brought industries to a standstill, according to interviews with two dozen companies and workers. | At the Port of Los Angeles, 145 drivers have been laid off and others have been sent home without pay as massive ships from China stopped arriving and work dried up. At travel agencies in Atlanta and Los Angeles, several workers lost their jobs as bookings evaporated. Christie Lites, a stage-lighting company in Orlando, laid off more than 100 of its 500 workers nationwide this past week and likely will lay off 150 more, according to chief executive Huntly Christie. Meanwhile a hotel in Seattle is closing an entire department, a former employee said, and as many as 50 people lost their jobs after the South by Southwest festival in Austin got canceled. Many job losses have been concentrated in the travel, tourism, events and trucking industries. Economists fear more layoffs in the coming weeks as supply chains come to a halt and people stay home and spend less.

Reminder: "Temporarily" eliminating the payroll tax DEFUNDS MEDICARE, MEDICAID, SOCIAL SECURITY. And no paycheck (because you're in quarantine) automatically means no payroll tax.

"Social isolation" or "self-quarantine" or whatever we're calling it—stay home, have everything delivered—sounds great if you're a middle-class white person whose job is fake enough to be done 100 percent at a computer from anywhere.

YEP: Moving MLB games to another city because of coronavirus makes no sense, health experts say. “People go to see their teams. This is just begging for more people to get infected, and more people to die. It’s a very bad idea.”

I'm a HUGE MEGA FAN of MLB, NBA, NFL (and I was a huge fan of hockey a long time ago....) and I want the NBA to play games closed to fans, and MLB to suspend the season until COVID-19 is done. I'm petrified of these players getting sick and recovering but with ANY KIND of lasting cardiovascular/respitory damage. These players bring me joy. SELF-QUARANTINE. Ditto for the music industry and film industrial arts industry. SELF-QUARATINE. You're the people with the financial means to do so. Close this fucking country down already. Ban all flights coming in. Ban all gatherings with more than 100 people. Close down all schools and daycares. A one month shutdown would zap the spread in the USA.

Moron-in-Chief: useless in a crisis. SIX WEEKS AGO, his own appointed Health and Human Services Secretary declared COVID-19 “a public health emergency for the United States.”

The Berniebros have been completely wrong about everything in the primaries so far but are convinced they’re right about Biden losing to Trump in a general election

Before: "If you don't vote for Sanders, then you don't care if people die from lack of affordable healthcare!" Now: "Bernie-or-Bust, I don't care if Trump guts $550B/10years from medicare & $700B/10 years from medicaid, Trump and Biden are equally terrible!"

"What last night's results have helped this campaign do, is really fast track a transition from the primary mode to the general election mode. The results really... putting them on a track to an insurmountable delegate lead" - @mikememoli w/ @NicolleDWallace
