This country has lost a great man today. Thank you for everything you did during your life, Rep. Elijah Cummings.

This man was the epitome of a public servant. He was kind, firm, and fair. The nation and the Democrats have lost quite an important man today. He's also been attacked personally by Trump on several occasions, which I count as a mark of good character.

I hope they leave Elijah's chair empty.

His personal achievements and services aside, I am sorry he had to live to see a president Trump, to see a nation and world turn backwards and giddily embrace racism, to see this world fall apart, and not live long enough to see Trump impeached (and in handcuffs) and this country come back to together.

Elijah will forever be remembered for his kind strength that gave hope love and support to generations of Americans. To his last, he has continued to work for all of us, whether it be through legislation, oversight, or providing an inspirational example to us all. He was a remarkable man in so many ways - This news is so heartbreaking that there just aren't words..
