That Bombshell Call Taylor Revealed Was Quite Possibly Monitored By Russians
https://talkingpointsmemo.com/news/call-taylor-trump-sondland-russians-cellphone
Remember when Obama, Bush 2, Clinton and Bush 1 used an unsecured phone to speak with ambassadors who were in an unsecured location where others could overhear? Remember when Obama seriously balked at giving up his blackberry and the feds installed extra security on it?
A second U.S. Embassy staffer in Kyiv overheard a key cellphone call between Trump and his ambassador to the European Union discussing the need for Ukrainian officials to pursue "investigations," The Associated Press has learned. The July 26 call between Trump and Gordon Sondland was first described during testimony Wednesday by William B. Taylor Jr., the acting U.S. ambassador to Ukraine. Taylor said one of his staffers overhead the call while Sondland was in a restaurant the day after Trump’s July 25 phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy that triggered the House impeachment inquiry. The second diplomatic staffer also at the table was Suriya Jayanti, a foreign service officer based in Kyiv. A person briefed on what Jayanti overheard spoke to AP on condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive matter currently under investigation.

The Justice Department Inspector General’s office has told witnesses who are set to review draft sections of its long-awaited report on the FBI investigation of President Trump’s 2016 campaign that they will not be allowed to submit written feedback — one in a series of unusual restrictions that some fear could make the final document less accurate, people familiar with the matter said. As is the case in most inspector general probes, witnesses are being invited to review draft sections of the report and offer comments and corrections, the people said. But — unlike most cases — they are being told those comments must be conveyed only verbally, the people said. Even though Attorney General William P. Barr and other officials have been working in recent weeks to determine what should be redacted from the report as classified or private information, people familiar with the process said that the entire draft document is marked “Top Secret,” so anyone who discusses its contents outside a secure government room could be committing a crime. Witnesses, they said, are being asked to review their sections in a secure area, after signing nondisclosure agreements, according to people familiar with the matter. The witnesses have also been told they will not be allowed to remove any notes they make about the document, the people said. The moves have left some witnesses concerned their objections might not be recorded precisely and incorporated into the inspector general’s findings, the people said. The witnesses, they said, are also concerned that the process gives the inspector general complete control in characterizing any comments witnesses make — and leaves witnesses with no ability to create a paper trail that might help them show their words were captured inaccurately.

A military judge for Guantánamo’s war court found that the handling of classified information from secret prisons was deeply flawed, complicating the Cole case. | Prosecutors in the case of a Qaeda suspect misrepresented to defense lawyers what happened to him in C.I.A. custody, a military judge has ruled, complicating efforts to bring the suspect to trial at Guantánamo Bay and raising new questions about how the military commission system is dealing with the legacy of the C.I.A.’s secret prisons. The ruling came in the case of Abd al Rahim al Nashiri, a Saudi man who is accused of orchestrating the Oct. 12, 2000, bombing by Al Qaeda of the warship Cole off Yemen that killed 17 American sailors. He was captured in 2002 in Dubai; subjected to waterboarding, sleep deprivation, a mock execution and other violence in the C.I.A. secret prison network; and then transferred in 2006 to Guantánamo for trial. In preparation for his trial, prosecutors had been providing his defense team with summaries or redacted versions of evidence related to his detention in the so-called C.I.A. black sites, with the ability to remove material based on national security concerns. In a 23-page ruling dated Thursday, the judge, Col. Lanny J. Acosta Jr. of the Army, said that he reviewed a sample of evidence provided to defense lawyers and found “deletions that could fairly be characterized as self-serving and calculated to avoid embarrassment,” and “indicative of a minimalist view” of evidence defense lawyers were entitled to receive.

David Jones stopped working to take care of his son, who has autism and needed constant care. Then he received a lymphoma diagnosis. Now in remission, he wants to create a better future for his child. “I’m trying to be the best father I can be,” he said. | One of his favorite jobs was at a bookstore in Brooklyn, where he illustrated more than a dozen children’s book covers. The stories, some of which were based on African fables, were published independently, he said. Among Mr. Jones’s most prized artworks are the drawings he created for a book about a flying pancake that every animal in Africa wants to catch. The cover, illustrated in shades of blue, orange and brown, shows pairs of lions, giraffes and monkeys on the hunt for the airborne pancake. But illustrating did not provide a sustainable income for Mr. Jones, who instead found work as a plumber and a welder. He found himself drawing less in recent years as the upheaval in his personal life became more disruptive. He has never liked selling his artwork. “I will now, because I have to,” he said. “It’s about survival.” Each month, Mr. Jones receives $1,220 in Supplemental Security Income benefits for himself and his son, $313 in Social Security benefits and $215 in food stamps. This summer, a friend suggested that Mr. Jones join a fatherhood program offered by Brooklyn Community Services, one of the seven organizations supported by The New York Times Neediest Cases Fund.

3 Indiana Judges Suspended After White Castle Brawl That Ended In Gunshots | Back in May, three Indiana judges got into a fight. It was the crescendo of an incident brimming with colorful details: a gaggle of judges drinking the night before a judicial conference, a failed attempt to visit a strip club called the Red Garter, a brawl in the parking lot of an Indianapolis White Castle. The altercation apparently started sometime after 3 a.m., when one of the judges, Sabrina Bell, raised a middle finger at two men yelling from a passing SUV, and ended after one of those men shot two of the judges. In between, the three judges took a number of actions that "discredited the entire Indiana judiciary," according to an opinion posted by the Indiana Supreme Court this week, suspending the judges. | Adams and Jacobs were both seriously wounded and required emergency surgeries; Jacobs was hospitalized for two weeks.
