Light News Dump | Iowa

Iowa

As much fun as it may be to dunk on Iowa, remember the real victims are the campaign staff and volunteers who just poured months of blood, sweat, and tears into something they believed in, only to have it go fakakta for no fault of their own. Another victory for cynicism. Also, the Iowa Caucuses have been a mess three cycles in a row.

All disasters are, almost by definition, the result of a bunch of things going wrong at once. Seems like last night was a combination of the app, as well as a caucus with lots of candidates, many of whom weren't at viability, AND ALSO new, fairly complicated rules for reporting.
https://twitter.com/chrislhayes/status/1224763160042901506

-Bernie didn't hit/exceed 2008 turnout like campaign suggested (on pace w/ 2016 turnout)
-Bernie didn't appeal to cross-over voters like they've suggested
-Bernie supporters crying "rigged" even though Bernie set the rules Four years running & this is the revolution?
https://twitter.com/josecanyousee/status/1224728211952549891

If you think this is bad, remember that the Bernie Sanders campaign people originally wanted "virtual caucuses" to allow people to vote by phone before the DNC killed it last summer.

Another update from Iowa Dems - There are inconsistencies in the reporting of the three sets of results. They emphasize it is a reporting issue NOT a hack or issue with the app. They are using a paper trail to validate results.

Iowa's caucus snafu is a minor bump, not a world-ending conspiracy - Iowa's technical cock-up is a good reason to end the outmoded caucus system, but not to sow conspiracy theories. The need for election night results is driven by television programming. Did we need to know the results of the Iowa Caucus last night? No. But the networks play that crazy election night “Decision 2020” music and we must have a “winner.” It’s all hype. A ratings war to be first with the news. I want accuracy, not expediency. These should be the last Iowa caucuses, all caucuses need to be ended already. The mere perception of a problem - even though the vote count is not in doubt - is undermining confidence in the election.

I am the caucus secretary for Story County Precinct 1-1. I've been on hold for over an hour to report the results. We have 6 delegates
https://twitter.com/shawnsebastian/status/1224538096571686912

And for those of you in my mentions: clearly I think this is really messed up too! I don't think this is a way to do democracy. I was just following the rules and this is the outcome the rules got us. If I can ever get the results reported ... still on hold.
https://twitter.com/shawnsebastian/status/1224559082356559872

As we wake up and still have no results from the caucus debacle, it’s a good time to remember the the committee to set the Dem primary calendar was the Unity and Reform Committee (pro-Sanders "leftists" who are not Democrats.....) There were defenders of caucuses on the committee. Folks like me argued caucuses were anti-democratic

Take a look at this in The Atlantic, written Monday, BEFORE the Caucus started....: The Iowa Caucus Could Go Very Wrong
https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2020/02/new-rules-might-complicate-iowa-caucus/605950/

Trump and Republicans tweeting furiously right now: "Democrats can't even count heads! And you want them in charge of your healthcare and everything else???!!!"

Trump drew on a hurricane map with a sharpie, congratulated the wrong state for a Super Bowl win, threw paper towels at hurricane victims dying in Puerto Rico and thought he could buy Greenland. He thought he could just rake a forest. He thought he could nuke a hurricane. His administration listed WAKANDA as a trading partner. Also in 2012, it took Republicans two weeks to sort Iowa results. They fully botched the caucuses. This is not to say Democrats weren'’t incredibly incompetent last night. You Republicans are not on any position to make accusations. And Ted Cruz continues to pimp for the guy who dissed his wife, called his father a murderer and basically just cucks him all over the henhouse. Trump himself refused to stand in silence with his hand over his heart for the national anthem and bungled the words. Fuck everybody this morning.

Amazing how "Mayor Pete's campaign paid this firm for voter contact software last year" evolves into "Mayor Pete is a part-owner of this firm's app." Total nonsense from a top Sanders surrogate
https://twitter.com/lachlan/status/1224786429366226947

The Iowa Democratic caucuses and the Republican caucuses have completely different processes. In a Republican caucus, participants simply cast a vote of support, the votes are added up and delegates are allocated proportionately to those results. But the Democratic process determines winners by state delegate equivalents, which operates kind of like the Electoral College. A better breakdown of the caucuses here: https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/elections/2020/02/02/iowa-caucus-how-iowa-caucuses-work-and-terms-know-definitions/4588880002/

The notion that Sanders inspires new, young voters to come out and vote just died tonight in Iowa. Turnout lower than 2016.
https://twitter.com/JohnRBielski/status/1224554231904030720

What Buttigieg did (giving a premature victory speech) has some rough precedent, like in 2008 when a candidate named Barack Obama lost the Texas primary & declared victory: “No matter what happens tonight, we have nearly the same delegate lead that we did this morning, and we are on our way to winning this nomination.”

“We will not be employing the same app or vendor used in the Iowa caucus

Iowa caucus app maker apologizes. The app was reportedly built in less than two months and not properly tested. Volunteers expected to use the app only received it yesterday afternoon.

We sincerely regret the delay in the reporting of the results of last night’s Iowa caucuses and the uncertainty it has caused to the candidates, their campaigns, and Democratic caucus-goers.

As the Iowa Democratic Party has confirmed, the underlying data and collection process via Shadow’s mobile caucus app was sound and accurate, but our process to transmit that caucus results data generated via the app to the IDP was not.

Importantly, this issue did not affect the underlying caucus results data. We worked as quickly as possible overnight to resolve this issue, and the IDP has worked diligently to verify results.

This person needs to be executed: Abusing Pets and Drugs, One Vet Has Left Decades of Despair in His Wake | After going to the authorities about the veterinarian, Dr. Daniel Koller, Mr. Figueroa discovered that the practitioner had decades of complaints filed against him in two states by regulators, customers and employees. | Practicing in both California and Oregon off and on for the past 30 years, Dr. Koller first faced a criminal charge of animal cruelty three years after he got his license in 1974; regulators in California said he was seen kicking and beating a German shepherd that employees later found dead. He had his license revoked for that and other abuse allegations in 1979, restored in 1984 and suspended again in 2001. | In the 1980s, he built a network of budget veterinary clinics in Oregon but also faced a new round of complaints. Oregon officials suspended his license in 2008 and revoked it in 2010, but he returned to practice five years later. In interviews with The New York Times, eight customers detailed a series of concerning encounters at Dr. Koller’s clinics in the four years since his license was most recently restored. One said Dr. Koller snatched her whimpering dog by the scruff of the neck with such force that the dog wet the table. Another said the doctor choked her frightened puppy. Some had concerns after their pets that went in for surgery ended up dying. | Much of the case against Dr. Koller prepared by California regulators in the 1970s concerned his treatment of the German shepherd at a pet hospital outside Monterey. An administrative law judge wrote that a woman had brought in the stray animal for treatment of a leg injury. The judge found that on two occasions in July 1975, Dr. Koller hung the dog off the ground, beating it with his hand and foot until it lost consciousness. The dog lost three teeth. Employees later found the dog in the freezer used to store dead animals, according to the veterinary board documents. A jury convicted Dr. Koller of animal cruelty in that case, and he was sentenced to 100 days in jail. The veterinary board in California was looking at a range of other concerns. In October 1974, regulators said, Dr. Koller pounded the head of a Lhasa apso dog named Tammy “until both eyes were hemorrhaged,” according to documents. In 1975, officials found evidence that he beat a dog named Coco for several minutes when the dog would not stop barking; bit and pounded a dog being prepared for surgery; used a slip lead to suspend a dachshund by the neck for at least 30 seconds; and violently slammed a cat on the sides and floor of its cage.

Several Iowa caucus votes ended in coin tosses when delegate counts were too close to call

https://www.vox.com/platform/amp/policy-and-politics/2020/2/3/21121665/iowa-caucus-results-2020-delegates-who-is-winning-coin-flip

It's 2020 and we are using coin flips and drawing names out of a hat and pretending a score of 2.33 is tied with 1.67. I thought we were over this coin tossing idiocy in 2016. Just switch to primaries and stop with all of this undemocratic idiocy. Imagine working your ass off for a year just to lose in your precinct by a delegate decided by a coin toss.

Bernie Sanders rigged the IA caucus for himself during the “unity reform” and still couldn’t win. Incompetent.

Stick a fork in Iowa: Let the caucus debacle be the last time the small Midwest state leads off the presidential sweepstakes. The first primary should be an important swing state. Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Michigan, Florida etc. Those are the states the democrats need to win in November, so they should get the most weight in the nomination process. Not fucking Iowa. Corn doesn't vote.

The #IACaucus results say that 668 precincts have yet to report. 259 of those are in counties where Bernie Sanders currently leads.

Voters need to trust the election process, regardless of who is operating the system. Mistakes were made in Iowa, and voters' confidence has been shaken. But people should not lose faith in our democracy. We must keep voting, while we demand accountability and improvement.
https://twitter.com/staceyabrams/status/1224833440585060353

The Iowa Democratic Party has taken responsibility and corrective action, which is the first step to restoring trust. The next step is re-examining the caucus process.
https://twitter.com/staceyabrams/status/1224833442778619904

Regardless of the tech issues, Iowa uses a caucus system that excludes people who cannot participate because of work or family obligations. The most democratic process invites all eligible voices, which is why early and mail-in voting and a full Election Day are essential.
https://twitter.com/staceyabrams/status/1224833443659468800

The Iowa Caucus is a long and storied tradition, but traditions can and do change. As we build a more accessible election process, we should revisit how Democrats launch our primary season.
https://twitter.com/staceyabrams/status/1224833445051936770

Our first contests must be representative of the American people as a whole. People of color have been loyal to the Democratic Party and deserve more of a voice in our primaries from the start. We can accomplish this by multiple states holding primaries the first day of voting.
https://twitter.com/staceyabrams/status/1224833446524194817

Suppression exists when voices are intentionally silenced AND when no one is willing to admit or fix the problem. Voter suppression awaits millions of voters in November unless we organize against efforts to block and discourage voters.
