The People v. Donald J. Trump The criminal case against him is already in the works — and it could go to trial sooner than you think.

The defendant looked uncomfortable as he stood to testify in the shabby courtroom. Dressed in a dark suit and somber tie, he seemed aged, dimmed, his posture noticeably stooped. The past year had been a massive comedown for the 76-year-old former world leader. For decades, the bombastic onetime showman had danced his way past scores of lawsuits and blustered through a sprawl of scandals. Then he left office and was indicted for tax fraud. As a packed courtroom looked on, he read from a curled sheaf of papers. It seemed as though the once inconceivable was on the verge of coming to pass: The country's former leader would be convicted and sent to a concrete cell.

The date was October 19, 2012. The man was Silvio Berlusconi, the longtime prime minister of Italy.

Here in the United States, we have never yet witnessed such an event. No commander-in-chief has been charged with a criminal offense, let alone faced prison time. But if Donald Trump loses the election in November, he will forfeit not only a sitting president's presumptive immunity from prosecution but also the levers of power he has aggressively co-opted for his own protection. Considering the number of crimes he has committed, the time span over which he has committed them, and the range of jurisdictions in which his crimes have taken place, his potential legal exposure is breathtaking. More than a dozen investigations are already under way against him and his associates. Even if only one or two of them result in criminal charges, the proceedings that follow will make the O. J. Simpson trial look like an afternoon in traffic court.

It may seem unlikely that Trump will ever wind up in a criminal court. His entire life, after all, is one long testament to the power of getting away with things, a master class in criminality without consequences, even before he added presidentiality and all its privileges to his arsenal of defenses. As he himself once said, "When you're a star, they let you do it." But for all his advantages and all his enablers, including loyalists in the Justice Department and the federal judiciary, Trump now faces a level of legal risk unlike anything in his notoriously checkered past — and well beyond anything faced by any previous president leaving office. To assess the odds that he will end up on trial, and how the proceedings would unfold, I spoke with some of the country's top prosecutors, defense attorneys, and legal scholars. For the past four years, they have been weighing the case against Trump: the evidence already gathered, the witnesses prepared to testify, the political and constitutional issues involved in prosecuting an ex-president. Once he leaves office, they agree, there is good reason to think Trump will face criminal charges. "It's going to head toward prosecution, and the litigation is going to be fierce," says Bennett Gershman, a professor of constitutional law at Pace Law School who served for a decade as a New York State prosecutor.

Here, according to the legal experts, is how Trump could become the first former president in American history to find himself on trial — and perhaps even behind bars.

You might think, given all the crimes Trump has bragged about committing during his time in office, that the primary path to prosecuting him would involve the U.S. Justice Department. If Joe Biden is sworn in as president in January, his attorney general will inherit a mountain of criminal evidence against Trump accumulated by Robert Mueller and a host of inspectors general and congressional oversight committees. After the DOJ's incoming leadership is briefed on any sensitive matters contained in the evidence, federal prosecutors will move forward with their investigations of Trump "at the fastest pace they can," says Mary McCord, a former deputy assistant attorney general.

They'll have plenty of potential charges to choose from. Both Mueller and the Senate Intelligence Committee — a Republican-led panel — have extensively documented how Trump committed obstruction of justice (18 U.S. Code § 73), lied to investigators (18 U.S. Code § 1001), and conspired with Russian intelligence to commit an offense against the United States (18 U.S. Code § 371). All three crimes carry a maximum sentence of five years in prison — per charge. According to legal experts, federal prosecutors could be ready to indict Trump on one or more of these felonies as early as the first quarter of 2021.

But prosecuting Trump for any crimes he committed as president would face two significant and perhaps fatal hurdles. First, on his way out of office, Trump could decide to preemptively pardon himself. "I wouldn't be surprised if he issues a broad, sweeping pardon for any U.S. citizen who was a subject, a target, or a person of interest of the Mueller investigation," says Norm Eisen, who served as counsel to House Democrats during Trump's impeachment. Since scholars are divided on whether a self-pardon would be constitutional, what happens next would depend almost entirely on which judge ruled on the issue. "One judge might say, 'Sorry, presidential pardons is something the Constitution grants exclusively to the president, so I'm going to dismiss this,' " says Gershman. "Another judge might say, 'No, the president can't pardon himself.' " Either way, the case would almost certainly wind up getting litigated all the way to the Supreme Court, perhaps more than once, causing a long delay.

Even if the courts ultimately ruled a self-pardon unconstitutional, another big hurdle would remain: Trump's claims that "executive privilege" bars prosecutors from obtaining evidence of presidential misconduct. The provision has traditionally been limited to shielding discussions between presidents and their advisers from external scrutiny. But Trump has attempted to expand the protection to include pretty much anything that he or anyone in the executive branch has ever done. William Consovoy, one of Trump's lawyers, famously argued in federal court that even if Trump gunned someone down in the street while he was president, he could not be prosecuted for it while in office. Although the courts have repeatedly ruled against such sweeping arguments, Trump will continue to claim immunity from the judicial process after he leaves office — a surefire delaying tactic. "If federal charges were ever brought, it is unlikely that a trial would be scheduled or start anytime in the foreseeable future," says Timothy W. Hoover, president of the New York State Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. By the time any federal charges come to trial, Trump is likely to be either senile or dead. Even if he broke the law as president, the experts agree, he may well get away with it.

But federal charges aren't the likeliest way that The People v. Donald J. Trump will play out. State laws aren't subject to presidential pardons, and they cover a host of crimes beyond those committed in the White House. When it comes to charging a former president, state attorneys general and county prosecutors can go places a U.S. Attorney can't.

According to legal experts, the man most likely to drag Trump into court is the district attorney for Manhattan, Cyrus Vance Jr. It's a surprising scenario, given Vance's well-deserved reputation as someone who has gone easy on the rich and famous. After taking office in 2010, he sought to reduce Jeffrey Epstein's status as a sex offender, dropped an investigation into whether Ivanka Trump and Donald Trump Jr. had committed fraud in the marketing of the Trump Soho, and initially decided not to prosecute Harvey Weinstein despite solid evidence of his sex crimes. "He has a reputation for being particularly cautious when it comes to going after rich people, because he knows that those are the ones who can afford the really formidable law firms," says Victoria Bassetti, a fellow at the Brennan Center for Justice who served on the team of lawyers that oversaw the Senate impeachment trial of Bill Clinton. "And like most prosecutors, Vance is exceptionally protective of his win-loss rate."

But it was Vance who stepped up when the federal case against Trump faltered. "He's a politician," observes Martin Sheil, a former IRS criminal investigator. "He's got his finger up. He knows which way the wind's blowing, and he knows the wind in New York is blowing against Trump. It's in his political interest to join that bandwagon."

Last year, after U.S. Attorneys in the Southern District dropped their investigation into the hush money that Trump had paid Stormy Daniels, Vance took up the case. Suspecting that l'affaire Stormy might prove to be part of a larger pattern of shady dealings, his office started digging into Trump's finances. What Vance is investigating, according to court filings, is evidence of "extensive and protracted criminal conduct at the Trump Organization," potentially involving bank fraud, tax fraud, and insurance fraud. The New York Times has detailed how Trump and his family have long falsified records to avoid taxes, and during testimony before Congress in 2019, Trump's longtime fixer Michael Cohen stated that Trump had inflated the value of his assets to obtain a bank loan.

Crucially, all of these alleged crimes occurred before Trump took office. That means no claims of executive privilege would apply to any charges Vance might bring, and no presidential pardon could make them go away. A whole slew of potential objections and delays would be ruled out right off the bat. What's more, the alleged offenses took place less than six years ago, within the statute of limitation for fraud in New York. Vance, in other words, is free to go after Trump not as a crooked president but as a common crook who happened to get elected president. And the fact that he has been pursuing these cases while Trump is president is a sign that he won't be intimidated by the stature of the office after Trump leaves it.

In writing up an indictment against Trump, Vance's team could try to string together a laundry list of offenses in hopes of presenting an overwhelming wall of guilt. But that approach, experts warn, can become confusing. "A two- or three-count indictment is easier to explain to a jury," says Ilene Jaroslaw, a former assistant U.S. Attorney. "If they think the person had criminal intent, it doesn't matter if it's two counts or 20 counts, in most cases, because the sentence will be the same."

There are two main charges that Vance is likely to pursue. The first is falsifying business records (N.Y. Penal Law § 175.10). During Cohen's trial, federal prosecutors filed a sentencing memorandum that explained how the Trump Organization had mischaracterized hush-money payments as "legal expenses" in its bookkeeping. Under New York law, falsifying records by itself is only a misdemeanor, but if it results in the commission of another crime, it becomes a felony. And false business records frequently lead to another offense: tax fraud (N.Y. Tax Law § 1806).

If Trump cooked his books, observes Sheil, that false information would essentially "flow into the tax returns." The first crime begets the second, making both the bookkeeper and the tax accountant liable. "Since you have several folks involved," Sheil says, "you could either bring a conspiracy charge, maximum sentence five years, or you could charge each individual with aiding and abetting the preparation of a false tax return, with a max sentence of three years."

To build a fraud case against Trump, Vance subpoenaed his financial records. But those records alone won't be enough: To secure a conviction, Vance will need to convince a jury not only that Trump cheated on his taxes but that he intended to do so. "If you just have the documents, the defense will say that defendant didn't have criminal intent," Jaroslaw explains. "I call it the 'I'm an idiot' defense: 'I made a mistake. I didn't mean to do anything.' " Unfortunately for Trump, both Cohen and his longtime accountant, Allen Weisselberg, have already signaled their willingness to cooperate with prosecutors. "What's great about having an accountant in the witness stand is that they can tell you about the conversation they had with the client," Jaroslaw says.

Through appeals, Trump has managed to drag out the battle over his tax returns. The case has gone all the way to the Supreme Court, back down to the district court, and back up to the appeals court. But Trump has lost at every stage, and it appears that his appeals could be exhausted this fall. Once Vance gets the tax returns, Eisen estimates, he could be ready to indict Trump as early as the second quarter of 2021.

Sheil, for one, believes Vance may already have Trump's financial records. It's routine procedure, he notes, for criminal tax investigators working with the Manhattan DA to obtain personal and business tax returns that are material to their inquiry. But issuing a subpoena to Trump's accountants may have been a way to signal to them that they could face criminal charges themselves unless they cooperate in the investigation.

Once indicted, Trump would be arraigned at New York Criminal Court, a towering Art Deco building at 100 Centre Street. Since a former president with a Secret Service detail can hardly slip away unnoticed, he would likely not be required to post bail or forfeit his passport while awaiting trial. His legal team, of course, would do everything it could to draw out the proceedings. Filing appeals has always been just another day at the office for Trump, who, by some estimates, has faced more than 4,000 lawsuits during the course of his career. But this time, his legal liability would extend to numerous other state and local jurisdictions, which will also be building cases against him. "There's like 1,037 other things where, if anybody put what he did under a microscope, they would probably find an enormous amount of financial improprieties," says Scott Shapiro, director of the Center for Law and Philosophy at Yale University.
Even accounting for legal delays, many experts predict that Trump would go to trial in Manhattan by 2023. The proceedings would take place at the New York State Supreme Court Building. Assuming that the judge was prepared for an endless barrage of motions and objections from Trump's defense team, the trial might move quite quickly — no longer than a few months, according to some legal observers. And given the convictions that have been handed down against many of Trump's top advisers, there's reason to believe that even pro-Trump jurors can be persuaded to convict him. "The evidence was overwhelming," concluded one MAGA supporter who served on the jury that convicted Paul Manafort, Trump's former campaign chairman. "I did not want [him] to be guilty. But he was, and no one is above the law."

Trump's conviction would seal the greatest downfall in American politics since Richard Nixon. Unlike his associates who were sentenced to prison on federal charges, Trump would not be eligible for a presidential pardon or commutation, even from himself. And while his lawyers would file every appeal they can think of, none of it would spare Trump the indignity of imprisonment. Unlike the federal court system, which often allows prisoners to remain free during the appeals process, state courts tend to waste no time in carrying out punishment. After someone is sentenced in New York City, their next stop is Rikers Island. Once there, as Trump awaited transfer to a state prison, the man who'd treated the presidency like a piggy bank would receive yet another handout at the public expense: a toothbrush and toothpaste, bedding, a towel, and a green plastic cup.

Joe Biden had just won the Democratic nomination, and the youth-focused super PAC Wessel runs, NextGen America, now had to figure out how to persuade the generation of TikTok and trigger warnings to turn out to vote for a 77-year-old man best known for record players and malarkey.

Much of NextGen’s staff supported Senators Elizabeth Warren or Bernie Sanders. Wessel, who is 31 and a D.C. native, liked Warren best too. "There are so many people on our staff who were like, I don’t know if he was in my top three," Wessel told me recently.

And Wessel’s worries about Biden weren’t just personal. Although the former vice president still leads Donald Trump in the polls overall, Trump backers are more likely to "strongly support" Trump than Biden backers are to strongly support Biden. Biden supporters said they were not as "excited to vote" for him as Trump supporters were to vote for Trump, nor are they as "enthusiastic" about their candidate, according to polls done in recent months. This problem is especially pronounced among young people, whose votes Sanders, not Biden, won in every state on Super Tuesday. Today, Biden’s net favorability rating is negative among voters under 35, according to a recent CNN analysis. (In response to a request for comment about these figures, Biden campaign spokesperson Jamal Brown said, "Poll after poll shows Joe Biden leading the race, and our campaign will be working hard to win every vote.")

All of this left Wessel with a problem, given that his job is to get Democrats into office, regardless of whether they are cool. In May, NextGen announced it planned to spend $45 million to help Biden beat Trump.

To see what messages might resonate with young voters, Wessel and his colleagues turned to Global Strategy Group, a polling firm they often work with. In April, the firm began conducting focus groups through Zoom with young Democrats. Andrew Baumann, a senior vice president with Global Strategy Group, would moderate the discussion among a handful of voters, with Wessel and his colleagues messaging him on the side, suggesting ideas to test out.

At first, these focus groups only underscored Biden’s enthusiasm problem. In the words of one Hispanic Gen Z participant, "I honestly don’t know enough about Biden to really form an opinion."

Some of the messages Baumann tried on the group didn’t perform very well. For instance, participants didn’t like being told that Trump is so bad, they simply must vote for Biden, even if they don’t particularly want to. "They needed positive reasons to do it," Baumann told me. The "You must stop Trump" strategy didn’t work.

The message that did work would spring from Wessel’s mind, but he doesn’t remember exactly how it came to him. Wessel had been talking with Gretchen Barton, a researcher at Olson Zaltman, a firm that studies what makes consumers and voters tick. Barton told him about a study she did of young voters. These voters, she found, "had a rebellious hope in the face of overwhelming odds." When asked to describe what voting felt like, one participant imagined Katniss Everdeen, from the Hunger Games franchise. "I feel like we’re living in this kind of dystopia where elites are using us as pawns for their own benefit, and people at the bottom are suffering," the participant told Barton and her colleagues. "I identify with Katniss trying to give the people in my community a little more dignity and love and trying to make the world a better place. I feel like voting is an expression of this."

Wessel thought back to the image of Katniss—a heroic underdog trying to defeat evil. He thought about how Millennials have been kicked in the butt by 9/11, Hurricane Katrina, the Iraq War, the Great Recession, and the pandemic and the current economic collapse. He thought about how, though many of the young people he knew liked Sanders better than Biden, others preferred Andrew Yang, or Warren, or Beto O’Rourke. "It was pretty all over the place," he said. There wasn’t just one person they expected to swoop in and save them.

He came up with what NextGen now calls "the Democratic Avengers," after the Marvel movie featuring an ensemble of superheroes. The idea is that by voting for Biden, you’re voting not just for him; you’re voting for all of the Democrats—many of them cool and hip!—that Biden will have in his orbit. Biden might borrow policies from Warren, for example, or have Sanders as an adviser. "If he is elected, it won’t just be Joe Biden," this message reads. "Biden has pledged to build an administration filled with progressive leaders, experts, and activists from inside and outside of politics."

This idea went over really well, according to Wessel and Baumann. In the focus groups, one white Millennial said "the saving grace of this (potential) presidency would be his crew. If he actually chooses true progressives and activists, I will be surprised but happy to admit I misjudged him."

The Democratic Avengers has since become one of the group’s most popular messages about Biden, according to its surveys, and the idea has made its way into ads. One features action-movie music, a comic-book font, and various Democrats stylized as cartoon characters. Bernie Sanders, it reads, "supports a $15 minimum wage!" Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is "champion of [the] Green New Deal!" Joe Biden, meanwhile, "is building the team that we want to run things!" A similar theme has also made its way into an ad by Students for [Ed] Markey, another old guy who recently triumphed somewhat unexpectedly. Recently, The Late Show With Stephen Colbert made a loving send-up with a similar Avengers theme.

The prospects of the Avengers strategy are still murky. The Avengers-style ad by NextGen had 145 views on YouTube when I last played it. Young voters’ cynicism about Biden and other traditional politicians might extend to a PAC’s dorky attempt to convince them that senators are superheroes.

I pointed out to Wessel that this message is exactly what conservative pundits say about a potential Biden presidency: that the aging moderate will be easily manipulated by more radical Democrats, such as Ocasio-Cortez and Sanders. He didn’t seem concerned. "The Republican Party saying it’s the Biden-Bernie agenda? Yeah, that’s totally motivating for our voters," he said. "Keep it up."

It was motivating for one woman I interviewed who was depressed about Biden’s nomination. Gemma Rose Cohen, a 33-year-old from San Francisco, told me it wasn’t that she didn’t like Biden, "just that I felt like he was from the last generation of Democrats." She was still planning to vote for him, but she felt a little meh about it. But when I told her that Biden might surround himself with other, more leftist Democrats, she sounded more enthusiastic. "He’s already incorporating those progressive ideas and working with people that I love," she said.

If the Avengers model works beyond focus groups and the occasional YouTube video, it could suggest that young people, or at least Democrats, or at least young Democrats, are actually more interested in liberal policies than they are in charismatic candidates. Rather than get fired up about Biden’s personality, 20-somethings might thrill to a coterie of technocrats who have concrete proposals to change the way the country works. Brent Cohen, the executive director of Generation Progress Action, another youth-voting advocacy group, told me that he’s not worried about the Biden enthusiasm gap because "young people vote based on policy." And he and other Democratic strategists believe that when it comes to policy, the choice for young voters is clear.

Thank you to all the NBA players who agreed to participate in the NBA Restart, which was not just about finishing the 2019-2020 season, but also about creating a socially-distanced test bubble where public health covid19 guidelines would be implemented and followed and shown to succeed in flushing out covid19. Incredible and amazing and thank you to all the NBA players who stepped up. The Clippers fans should not be foaming at the mouth: the Clippers finished with the second best record, have one of the greatest players ever on their team, they have one of the most feared coaches in the league, they have the best assistant coach - a man who coached LeBron James and the ramshackle Cavaliers to 4 NBA finals in a row versus Golden State, their team is a defensive powerhouse, they defeated the Mavericks in the first round, they fought to the death to win the second round, one team must finish first and one team must finish second, that's how game end. Nikola Jokic was the best player in the Nuggets/Clippers series. Once the Nuggets realized he was unguardable in Game 5, they never looked away from him. Unlike in Game 6 where he operated mostly at the top of the arc, in Game 7 he punished them either in the post or through that high screen and roll action with Murray. The Clippers would do their best to double him and each time he Jokic found an open man who can either score a basket or draw a foul. If you count the amount of FT's Denver players got from Jokic assist, he'd probably end the game with 20 assists. 

All those assists wouldn't be credited if players weren't cutting and making shots. Millsap, Harris and Morris made key shots. Jerami Grant and Torey Craig played as great defense on Kawhi as I've seen anyone guarding him. And MPJ, even if he didn't score as much today, showed enough hustle and grabbed key rebounds down the stretch.

Jamal played great. He single-handedly kept them close in the 2 quarter when the Clippers could have blown it wide open. They were throwing so many different guys at him and he was still making bucket after bucket. And I think he played decent defense as well. Lou Williams and Paul George would hunt him on the other end through switches but he held his ground well.

The Nuggets have Golden State Warrior endurance.

The Clippers were completely rudderless in the second half. They spent the second half watching Jokic and Jamal. The Clippers spent a ton of time on every possession in a panic scramble mode. Even by the end of the 2nd quarter they were gassed and it never really got better.  It was too much to expect Kawhi and Paul to play 40+ minutes, score 30+ points, and guard the best 2 players on the other team in a blitzing scheme.

The 2019-2020 Los Angeles Clippers had last year's FMVP, and traded their entire future to acquire a person who was 3rd in MVP voting the previous season. They had the last 2 reigning 6MOY. They had players on the All Defense Team. They had a bench that would be better than starters on some teams. They had a coaching staff with strong championship experience. They had an "on/off" switch. They gave up a 3-1 series lead. They disappointed. They were and still are the LA Clippers.

Really not sure why the Clippers didn't attack Jokic in the paint more, especially in the 2nd half. He was in foul trouble early on, picking up 2 in the 1st quarter and 1 more pretty early in the 2nd quarter. Would've been a way to get PG and Kawhi going too since their shots weren't falling. I feel like the Jazz were better overall at making Jokic work on the defensive end.  Especially early in the 4th when it was Plumlee at the rim. I'm not a saying he's a bad defender but they could have at least tried to draw fouls. I rewatched that 4th quarter again and if you didn't know anyone you'd think JaMychal Green was the one who was suppose to bail then out in the 4th. Also in the second half the referees stopped calling fouls.

Nuggets just showed to everyone that they clearly are the better team at this moment. They beat the Clippers straight up in a 7 game series, no injuries, no weird ejections, no bad refs (well, some bad reffing, but not egregious). Clippers may be the better team on paper (even that might be debatable at this point), but it's not just about how many all-stars or 6MOTY candidates you have. Coaching, chemistry, heart, resilience, all that goes into the equation of who the better team is. And the Nuggets owned Clippers in all those categories. What sucks is that Kawhi and PG played absolutely excellent basketball all series before Game 7 (maybe outside of Game 2 for Kawhi).

The Nuggets really pulled off a shonen anime "surpassing our limits" moment in the middle of this series. To come back from a 3-1 deficit against a good team like the Jazz is one thing, but to do it again right after against the Clippers? That resilience is impressive. Even moreso when you compare it to their performance in last year's Tournament Arc where they looked pretty gassed from two 7-game series in a row. They've obtained a new form in this year's playoffs.

Clippers offense had the same problem they had as the day they put the team together: zero high level passing/playmaking.

BERRY CREEK, Calif.—As the smoke from the nearby fire-devastated town of Paradise cleared in 2018, local officials were trying to gain approval of forest-thinning projects to help this mountain community avoid a similar fate.

Nearly two years after they first applied for approval from the state of California, the contract for one of the projects went out for bidding on Sept. 4. At the same time, work was about to start on the other after a monthslong wait caused in part by the coronavirus pandemic.

Then just four days later, the North Complex fire roared through this community of 2,500, wiping out most of the homes and leaving at least 10 people dead, more than one-third of the total fatalities from wildfires this year in California.

Few places have felt the consequences more severely than Butte County, a rural area north of Sacramento where 19 large fires have scorched some 400,000 acres since 1999.

Earlier this week, Loren Gill drove into what remains of Berry Creek in an SUV to pick through some of the rubble of what had been a park community center. Nearby lay the ruins of Berry Creek Elementary, with a sign of its mascot, a Native American brave, charred.

"This is unbelievable," Mr. Gill, 78 years old, said as he drove past dozens of leveled homes, some with only the chimneys still intact. "Just a nightmare."

The Butte County Fire Safe Council on Oct. 26, 2018, received an $836,365 grant from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, or Cal Fire, to remove trees and brush from 234 acres. The plan was to create fire breaks along two of the main evacuation roads and for a development of homes around Lake Madrone.

Getting approval to spend the money would take almost two years.

While it is impossible to determine how Berry Creek would have fared if the thinning projects had been implemented, local officials said videos of other nearby areas where trees and brush were trimmed showed lower flames that moved slower.

Bald Rock and Rockerfeller roads, the two evacuation routes, now have charred cars and trucks on them. Around Lake Madrone, more than 50 homes were destroyed.

"Somebody dropped the ball," said Becky North, 41, whose family of four lost the house they lived in since building it in 2011. "I think some homes would have been saved."

After the Camp Fire destroyed Paradise on Nov. 8, 2018, officials of the Butte County Fire Safe Council—which acts as an umbrella group for fire safety in the area—urged state lawmakers to streamline regulatory red tape.

 California Gov. Gavin Newsom responded to the Camp Fire with a slew of directives, including fast-tracked authority for 35 thinning projects to protect 200 communities. Cal Fire said some of the projects had helped slow fires including one in Butte County completed last December.

The Berry Creek projects languished as the Butte County Fire Safe Council struggled to gain landowner approvals for the thinning, a requirement of the California Environmental Quality Act, or CEQA. One of the strictest such laws in the nation, CEQA makes it easy for local residents and interest groups to oppose construction and development projects.

In addition, Cal Fire officials kicked back some of the paperwork filed by the local leaders because it had been improperly formatted. "It's about lawsuits and if there is not enough information for us to sign we have to ask for more," said Dave Derby, unit forester for Cal Fire's Butte area.

A spokesman for Gov. Newsom said his administration is committed to doing more forest-clearing work and that additional projects will be announced in the coming weeks.

To help move the Lake Madrone thinning, which was planned for 54 acres, Butte County Fire Safe Council officials decided to split that environmental review from the one for the evacuation routes because most landowners had signed on, said Calli-Jane DeAnda, executive director of the Butte County Fire Safe Council.

It took 17 months to get the final go ahead from Cal Fire in March. Then a new problem hit: the coronavirus pandemic, which Ms. Bethune said put some of that work on hold.

After approval for the plan to create fire breaks along the evacuation roads came in July, Ms. DeAnda said her group had hoped to start both projects this fall and complete them within a month.

"We were just waiting on the contractor to get started," she said.

The fire has effectively negated the need for that fuel work, now. The forest of pine and oaks surrounding the town was burned so severely that in some places only skeleton trees are left, devoid of leaves.

Volunteer Fire Chief Reed Rankin, who lost his own home, said all he and other first responders could do was evacuate people ahead of a firestorm driven by 40 miles-per-hour winds.

"We've got to rethink how we are going to manage the forests," said Mr. Rankin, after sifting through the rubble of a destroyed fire station. "I'm still at a loss, still numb."

We've seen in the Toronto series how much the zone defense bothers Boston. What I think Miami brings differently, aside from having more length for their personnel, is that each time down the court they mix the defenses up. Boston doesn't really know what kind of defense, zone or man-to-man, or what kind of zone even happens each time they cross the court.

Jaylen played great. I wish his last shot went in because it was so wide open and he just hit the last 2 to keep them within the game. 

I feel at times Smart forces too many things down the stretch. I get that he's the heart and soul of this team, but at key moments, that ball still has to be in the hands of Kemba or Jayson. But to be fair to him as well, they also had their own struggles with turnovers;

I see that a lot of people are impressed by Miami's zone. Deservingly so, but this is something they have also played in Game 1, and something to which Celtics have responded a lot better than in Game 2. There are several key things when attacking such zone:
- Ball movement on the three point line
- Playing through the high post (while also moving the ball)
- Off the ball players should move on the low post along the baseline
- And using the freeze dribble which is essentially: take one or two dribbles down the middle until the 2 guys from zone get tight and kick the ball out. Repeat until there is space for shot

Now Celtics did ALL of the above things in Game 1, and responded nicely in game two with Kemba dishing the ball to Smart in 2nd quarter on the first play in which Heat brought out the zone. But everything fell apart in 3rd quarter. And most of the times it was because of Tatum, he slowed down the ball movement and because ot that they were left with little time and all they could've done was drive into three players. They also stacked the players in the corners, but that isn't the best way to attack the 2-3 zone, as the lower players (so the left and right one from the 3 players down low) can cover it easily.  The 2-3 zone is designed to stop the drive and penetration, and that's the area where Celtics played great in the first half. Tatum was a completely different player in Game 2 than the one in Game 1. In first game he forced a bunch of tough shots, even those shots he made were really hard. I get that they are his shots but they are still bad shots. He corrected all that and drove with ease against Crowder, whenever he got that matchup. Celtics shot just 28 three pointers (14 in each half) in a game where Heat played most of the time in a 2-3 zone, and as mentioned, that zone is weak against ATB three pointers. Their percentage was really good for the game as well, 35.7% compared to Miami's 32.6%.. And Tatum, as their main shooter/scorer took only 1 three pointer in second half.. But turnovers from those drives against the zone caused the low number of shots for Cs. And yeah there were other issues, for example broken Pick and Roll plays where Adebayo gets his points, but you pick your poison, and they decided to defend the three point shot instead of easy bucket. There were situations where there was no need for that and could have helped on Adebayo, but it's easy to say now...I don't mean to take away anything from the Heat, they played another amazing game, Dragić was so good on offense, and gave a lot of problems to Kemba on defense, he was much better than Herro/Robinson in defending him. Butler and Crowder as the two top guys in 2-3 zone showed A LOT more aggression on defense and it payed off (4 and 3 steals, respectively). Robinson was on fire from 3 point range, and Herro kept hustling on offense again and pulling down offensive rebounds. They did have weak spots on offense as well, and Celtics did play good defense (as they did in game 1), but the main takeaway definitely were the struggles against the zone. I would be upset as hell if I'm hardcore Celtics' fan (I prefer the Celtics over the Heat but am not a hardcore Celtics fan, if the Finals are Heat versus Lakers I'm rooting for the Heat) because this is something they already tackled successfully but then they botched it in Game 2.

Police brutality, white privilege, racism — it's all real. It's time we stop pretending, or defending, or just closing our eyes to what's right in front of us. We have to listen, and we have to keep having these hard conversations. And it's not like this is just our history. This is right now. These are not political problems. These are human problems. It should not be seen as a political statement to discuss this stuff honestly. And I'm sure there are people out there who simply don't want to hear it. But let me just tell you a quick story. Shortly after George Floyd was killed, I was down in Atlanta doing my off-season workouts. It was obviously complicated because of COVID, so I had arranged to use a field where I could do some work with my receivers. The first one who could make it to Atlanta was Danny Amendola. Danny and I spent four days working out together. No problems at all. It was great. A week later, I went to do the same thing, at the same field, with four of my black teammates. We were just starting to dump all the footballs out on the field and some of the guys were still stretching when a gentleman came out and told us that we were trespassing — and to leave immediately. We didn't even have our cleats on yet. I remember I was standing there in my socks, just kind of stunned and confused, like, What? But he didn't even want to listen. We were still gathering up the footballs and trying to figure out another spot where we might be able to go when the gentleman pulled out his cellphone. He said, "I'm calling the police." After everything that we've witnessed over the last few months, and how situations can escalate for no reason at all … and here the police are being called. We were there for maybe 10 minutes total. Nobody said a bad word to him. And he still called the police and told them that we were being "uncooperative" and "not leaving the property." Obviously, we got out of there immediately. | I was embarrassed to have put my teammates in that situation, especially when I was told that it was cool to use the field. Especially when I had been on the same field with Danny with no problems. The only difference is what we all know in our hearts. Danny and I are white. We don't get the cops called on us in those situations. We don't immediately get called uncooperative. And if even if Danny and I somehow did get the cops called on us, we all know how that interaction would've gone. "Hey, what are you doing here? O.K, well, move along now. Have a good day." It's just a different dynamic. It's just the reality of this country, and it's O.K. to talk about it. Situations that I take for granted are different for my black teammates, and I am learning just how deep that goes every single day. After the Jacob Blake incident happened, our team came together and guys shared some very emotional and raw stories of their own experiences. The level of trauma that guys and their families were feeling — I mean really feeling — was just so deep. Multiple guys were saying how whenever they would leave their house to go to the facility, their parents were begging them to text them as soon as they arrived and as soon as they got home. Just to know that they were safe. That's the level of trauma that you feel as a parent when you see these videos and you instantly think, That could be my child. But the one story that stuck with me so much was when Trey Flowers talked about how he copes with the anxiety of dealing with the police. Trey was explaining that if he were to ever get pulled over in his car — something that I have experienced many times without even thinking twice about it — he would roll down his window, put both hands on the wheel, and ask the officer if he would like him to step out of the car so he can handcuff him. Just so that he is not seen as a threat. Just so the officer can't say, "Oh, he was reaching here, he was reaching there.…" Just so he makes it back home.  If you're a white person, all I'm asking you to do is to really think about that. Imagine that being your first instinct when you see police lights in your rearview mirror. No one in America should have to feel this way. Listen, I'm not some perfect person. I'm not trying to lecture anybody. I've made a million mistakes. I grew up in Highland Park, Texas, which is probably one of the most privileged places in the country. It's a place that I still love very much, but it's a bubble. That's just a fact. I was not exposed to a lot of diversity or different ideas growing up. I was not educated on these issues, and I probably said a bunch of stupid things when I was young that I regret. But a big part of life is about looking inside yourself and trying to evolve as a person. And when you hear your teammates telling these stories — and getting so emotional that they're breaking down crying — you can't just sit there and be silent. These were the same guys who had supported me last off-season during the darkest months of my life, when my wife was diagnosed with a brain tumor. It's still very hard for me to talk about, honestly. But I will just say that when you're going through hell like that, and you're still trying to be the quarterback of an NFL team and a guy who people can rely on, you absolutely can't do it alone. I would come into the facility at five in the morning and try to get my work in, and then I'd leave to go be with my wife just as guys were coming in for meetings. I remember passing my teammates in the hallway on my way out to the car, and they never once looked at me like I was letting them down. It was always, "We got you. Is there anything we can do to help? Is there anything you need? We're praying for you." This is what it means to be a part of a brotherhood. You have your brother's back when they're in pain. You listen to them. You try to help. I wish that we could do that as a country. There are still people, as sad as it is to say, who are simply not listening. After we canceled our practice, I received text messages that made me realize just how far we have to go in this conversation, and how people just assume I feel a certain way about all of this. Things like, "Sorry you had to miss practice, or, "Sorry you have to deal with this stuff, man." The fact that anyone would feel sorry for me, or be thinking about a football practice at a time like that, really speaks volumes. There are still people in this country who just want sports to be a distraction, and that's their right. But I beg to differ. I was drafted by the Lions in 2009, when the city was struggling due to the economic crisis. The city was bankrupt and they couldn't even afford to tear down the abandoned buildings all over downtown. Then you see how many of Detroit's public schools have been shut down over the last 15 years, and the unbelievable amount of rec centers that have closed, especially in low-income neighborhoods. A lot of people growing up in those communities have only known inequality and struggle for their whole lives. Michigan has been home to me and my family for a long time now. People have welcomed us with open arms, and we've always embraced that love. I visit schools from time to time where maybe kids don't have access to Wi-Fi or even to a computer nearby, and you just want people to have a chance. But the thing is, you wouldn't know the hardship they're experiencing based on some of the smiles on these kids' faces. And just their attitude toward life — despite what their families are going through. And now, after all these years of economic hardship, we're in the middle of a pandemic, and these same kids have been in lockdown for months, where they have been exposed to video after video of people who look just like them having these incidents with police. I didn't grow up like that. I didn't have to deal with anything remotely close to what those kids have to deal with. And if you grew up the way I did, and you still happen to live in one of those bubbles where you don't have to worry about these things, maybe you're tired of hearing about all this. Maybe you want to pretend it doesn't exist, because you don't see it with your own eyes. Maybe you just want us to "shut up and play football." That's your right. I probably can't change your mind. All I can ask you to do, as we continue through this NFL season, is to close your eyes and really put yourself in other people's shoes. Try for a minute to put all the social media and the politics and the arguing aside, and look within yourself. Ask yourself hard questions. But more than anything, listen. It's time.

How Onside Kick Legend Younghoe Koo bested the Seahawks on Sunday:

Koo's onside wizardry can be attributed to masterful technique, effective scheming/recovery execution, and a dollop of good luck. Here's how he pulled off his latest brilliant onside kick against the Seahawks on Sunday:

First a moment of kickoff Technique:

In a typical deep kickoff, kickers generally take 7-12 steps backwards away from the ball and 3-6 steps over to the side. They usually progress from a walk, jog, and run toward the football and aim about one third up from the bottom of the ball for a backspin (which creates maximum distance).

However, non-surprise onside kicks operate much differently. Kickers usually take just a couple steps back and over (similar to field goals). Instead of propping the ball up on a tee like deep kickoffs, they place the front end of the ball on the grass/turf with the point facing the aim point with the back point propped up toward them(most kickoff tees have a notch on the front to balance the ball for this). After stepping into the ball, Koo actually uses his toe to hit the top of the ball straight into the ground, creating an end-over-end topspin.

From there, a non-surprise onside kick must have two elements to succeed:
1). The ball must be slow enough or spend enough time on the ground for your team to travel the minimum required 10 yards to receive the kick. On this play it was ~1.6 seconds
2). The ball must pop up into the air or scuttle along the ground in such a way that your teammate can make a play on the ball 10-11 yards downfield. This is much harder given the often unpredictable bounce of the football - and where Koo's mastery really shows up.
Now to Sunday's play against the seahawks:

Nuggets were blown by Utah and the Clippers early on so it's all about adapting now. Adjustments on their end start with their primary offensive engine, Jokic. He did not fare well against Dwight's physicality, and a lot of his foul-drawing moves backfired on him (he'll hook his defenders arms to try and draw a foul, but Dwight's strong enough to keep his hands straight up while bodying up Jokic). I think Jokic plays smarter from here on out as a result - if he drops those cheap foul-drawing tactics, he'll stay out of foul trouble more - and Denver absolutely needs him on the floor to stand a chance. I was surprised reading the box scores after the game that he was credited with only 2 assists; he made a lot of great passes, especially to a cutting wing who had a smaller Laker guard on them for a quick deep post-up multiple times in the 1st half.

Murray was also good for the Nuggets - shooting 7-12 from the field and 3-5 from 3. Many of his looks were wide open, which we got to do a better job on. One came off a brain fart from Danny Green, who helped off Murray to aid KCP on a Millsap post-up iso - we live with that IMO instead of a wide open Murray 3. We can survive a good (say 20-30 pts) Murray game if we contain Jokic, but still need to keep him from getting in a rhythm because as seen in these playoffs he's capable of huge red hot scoring nights.

I didn't have too many observations on the rest of the Nuggets, mainly because they looked so physically overwhelmed by LeBron & AD. I will say that in the 1st quarter (especially when McGee was on), the paint was packed and LeBron didn't do a good job finishing, often taking close shots fading away from the basket. They may have to try just completely packing the paint all night long and conceding open 3's to Laker role players instead of the steady diet of AD dunks & FT's which they couldn't do anything to stop. They also conceded a lot of Danny Green floaters and post ups, which I thought was smart on their behalf.

After losing our first two game 1's and adjusting our gameplan afterwards, the onus is on the Nuggets to tweak their strategy. They're limited by their personnel, but Malone is a good coach and I'm sure we'll see a better Denver team next game

The players LeBron recruited to the Lakers were recruited for a reason, they're battle-hardened and battle-scarred NBA veterans bound for the Hall of Fame who experienced extreme highs and extreme lows. These particular Lakers players are willing to kick the opposing players in the face and break fingers and poke out eyes and crush noses and don't care if they foul out because another veteran has their back. The Lakers are deeper and more experienced and consistent and BATTLE HARDENED. Many of the Lakers players went straight from high school to the NBA. They grew up playing Old School 80's era basketball. They have been there done that ad infinitum for more than a decade. They are masters of switching between free gritty street basketball and rigidly controlled systematic choreographed basketball. LeBron assembled those players for that reason and that is why he is the MVP.
