https://www.cnn.com/2020/09/06/politics/trump-education-department-1619-project/index.html
But if you don't teach slavery then you can't cheerlead the confederacy or the KKK because if you want to pretend slavery never happened then you're eliminating the reason why the confederacy and the KKK were created. No different than "the Holocaust never happened and Hitler is my hero! And if the Holocaust happened only a few Jews were killed, Hitler is still my hero!". If the Holocaust never happened you have no Hitler. If the Holocaust did not wipe out most Jews, Hitler accomplished nothing. If slavery never happened, you have no confederacy or civil war or kkk etc.

Trump is using garbage math to make it look like he's doing a good job. We lost something like 40 million jobs thanks to covid. We've gained 10.6 million jobs in four months. Most of those jobs were always going to come back because of temporary furloughs and firings. If we do the math, we see that we're still 30 million jobs in the hole. Record high unemployment.
He can't hold rallies so this is the substitute. These are even broadcast by major news outlets.
✔ Today Trump will boast about his like nobody has ever seen before "job recovery" despite the fact that virtually all these "new jobs" are not new at all, they are simply due to reopening of businesses.

In an unprecedented public attack by a sitting US president on the leadership of the US military, Trump accused US military leaders of seeking to start wars to boost the profits of defense contractors: "I'm not saying the military's in love with me, the soldiers are, the top people in the Pentagon probably aren't because they want to do nothing but fight wars so that all of those wonderful companies that make the bombs and make the planes and make everything else stay happy"
What's also notable about Trump now railing against the "military industrial complex" is that he spent most of his first term touting how much funding he got for the military for those very same planes and bombs. The White House is aware that they don't have a bench of top military officials willing to defend the president. But denigrating them as mainly serving the military-industrial complex is quite something.

Other quotes: "He murdered him, no question in my mind," Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said of Mohammed bin Salman's role in the killing. "The crown prince directed the murder and was kept apprised of the situation all the way through." According to Cockburn's source about the seven whistleblowers, there's more. It is that Kushner (allegedly) gave the green light to MBS to arrest the dissident journalist, Jamal Khashoggi, who was later murdered and dismembered in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. A second source tells Cockburn that this is true and adds a crucial twist to the story. This source claims that Turkish intelligence obtained an intercept of the call between Kushner and MBS. And President Erdogan used it to get Trump to roll over and pull American troops out of northern Syria before the Turks invaded.

From 2005: Trump, to be fair, would also concentrate on the oil fields held by ISIS. "I have a plan," he told an Iowa rally. "I would bomb the shit out of them." Big cheer. "I would just bomb those suckers. And that's right, I'd blow up the pipes; I'd blow up the refineries; I'd blow up every single inch. There would be nothing left. And you know what, you'll get Exxon to come in there, and in two months, you ever see these guys? How good they are, the great oil companies? They'll rebuild that sucker brand new. And I'll take the oil." These victories-by-bombing promises are crowd-pleasers. And so, unfortunately, is torture. At a rally in Ohio last week, attended by thousands, Trump confirmed that he would bring back waterboarding. "You bet your ass, in a heartbeat," he said. Indeed, he would do "more than that." He rejected a Senate Intelligence Committee report, part of which was released last year, that found that harsh interrogation techniques used by the Bush Administration had failed. "Only a stupid person would say it doesn't work," Trump said. "If it doesn't work, they deserve it anyway for what they're doing to us." The "they" who "deserve" torture in this appalling formulation can probably remain unspecified for now.

Trump defenders are trying to justify Trump's slurs against the military by comparing them to Eisenhower's farewell address, the military-industrial complex speech. Anyone who says that is counting on you not to know what Eisenhower really said. He was defending and championing the military-industrial complex and pressing for the military industrial complex might to be used responsibly. Here is the speech, read it
https://avalon.law.yale.edu/20th_century/eisenhower001.asp
A vital element in keeping the peace is our military establishment. Our arms must be mighty, ready for instant action, so that no potential aggressor may be tempted to risk his own destruction. Our military organization today bears little relation to that known by any of my predecessors in peacetime, or indeed by the fighting men of World War II or Korea. Until the latest of our world conflicts, the United States had no armaments industry. American makers of plowshares could, with time and as required, make swords as well. But now we can no longer risk emergency improvisation of national defense; we have been compelled to create a permanent armaments industry of vast proportions. Added to this, three and a half million men and women are directly engaged in the defense establishment. We annually spend on military security more than the net income of all United States corporations. This conjunction of an immense military establishment and a large arms industry is new in the American experience. The total influence -- economic, political, even spiritual -- is felt in every city, every State house, every office of the Federal government. We recognize the imperative need for this development. Yet we must not fail to comprehend its grave implications. Our toil, resources and livelihood are all involved; so is the very structure of our society. In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the militaryindustrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist. We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals, so that security and liberty may prosper together. Akin to, and largely responsible for the sweeping changes in our industrial-military posture, has been the technological revolution during recent decades.
https://avalon.law.yale.edu/20th_century/eisenhower001.asp
Eisenhower, who inherited the Korean War, did reduce defense spending over his eight years by some 27%. Over Trump's four years in office, he boosted defense spending from just over $600 bn to just over $700 bn. Eisenhower was particularly concerned that military spending would overwhelm the private economy - and push the US into debt. Even before covid19, Trump had put the US on the path to trillion-dollar deficits forever: As we peer into society's future, we -- you and I, and our government -- must avoid the impulse to live only for today, plundering, for our own ease and convenience, the precious resources of tomorrow. We cannot mortgage the material assets of our grandchildren without risking the loss also of their political and spiritual heritage. We want democracy to survive for all generations to come, not to become the insolvent phantom of tomorrow.

Most White People With College Degrees And Most Minorities Support Trump LOL | Demographics are not yet destiny in American elections — millions of people don't align with the party their race and ethnicity or education would predict. Case in point: In 2016, more than a third of President Trump's support nationally came from non-Hispanic white Americans with college degrees (26 percent) and Asian, Black and Hispanic voters (12 percent), according to Pew Research Center data. On the flip side, about a quarter of Hillary Clinton's supporters were non-Hispanic white Americans without degrees.

In late July, America was briefly enthralled with "Unsolicited Seeds from China," which started showing up in mailboxes in all 50 states. These mystery seeds prompted warnings from the USDA, which said people should not plant them, and should instead alert their state agricultural authority and mail them to the USDA or their local officials. Many Americans heeded this advice. Many more decidedly did not. | According to a spreadsheet compiled by Michigan, 677 people filed official complaints with the state about the receipt of unsolicited seeds; 30 reported planting them. "I planted them in my hydroponic system in my home, I thought they were the strawberry seeds I ordered from Amazon. They turned Black and green mold so I threw them away," one person wrote. "If I had known these seeds were going to originate from China, I would not have purchased them from Amazon. I am still waiting on at least 4 other orders of seeds. Will burn them if they come." | "Our seed lab has identified the following: rose, amaranth (not Palmer), 2 mints, False Horse Balm, Self Heal, Lespedeza and Sweet Potato. Our APHIS-PPQ plant health director wants us to destroy the seeds by sterilization or incineration," the person who analyzed them wrote. A similar analysis in New Mexico found that some of the seeds were "noxious weeds" that exist in huge numbers in the United States but which people are banned from planting in many states. Those include oxeye daisy, and hedge bindweed. New Mexico also identified onion, cucumber, tomato, radish, peppergrass, alfalfa, corn, lettuce, hollyhock, and spearmint seeds. The USDA also gave states an official guide to destroying the seeds, which included baking them in an oven, suffocating them in two ziplock trash bags, and soaking them in bleach. If the seeds were planted, the USDA is currently advising people not to plant anything in that area for at least one year, and to destroy any plants that happen to grow there naturally. Another officially endorsed disposal method is encasing the seeds entirely in duct tape. Amazon announced over the weekend that it would ban all international plant sales.

The Miami Heat franchise needs to start getting some serious respect on their name. Drafting D-Wade then a few years later signing late prime Shaq was outstanding. Woodward book: Trump says he knew coronavirus was 'deadly' and worse than the flu while intentionally misleading Americans
By Robert Costa and Philip Rucker
September 9, 2020 at 11:55 a.m. EDT
President Trump's head popped up during his top-secret intelligence briefing in the Oval Office on Jan. 28 when the discussion turned to the novel coronavirus outbreak in China.
"This will be the biggest national security threat you face in your presidency," national security adviser Robert O'Brien told Trump, according to a new book by Washington Post associate editor Bob Woodward. "This is going to be the roughest thing you face."
Matthew Pottinger, the deputy national security adviser, agreed. He told the president that after reaching contacts in China, it was evident that the world faced a health emergency on par with the flu pandemic of 1918, which killed an estimated 50 million people worldwide.
Ten days later, Trump called Woodward and revealed that he thought the situation was far more dire than what he had been saying publicly.
"You just breathe the air and that's how it's passed," Trump said in a Feb. 7 call. "And so that's a very tricky one. That's a very delicate one. It's also more deadly than even your strenuous flu."
"This is deadly stuff," the president repeated for emphasis.
Listen: In a Feb. 7 interview, when asked what President Xi told him about the virus, Trump says, "This is deadly stuff."
At that time, Trump was telling the nation that the virus was no worse than a seasonal flu, predicting it would soon disappear, and insisting that the U.S. government had it totally under control. It would be several weeks before he would publicly acknowledge that the virus was no ordinary flu and that it could be transmitted through the air.
Trump admitted to Woodward on March 19 that he deliberately minimized the danger. "I wanted to always play it down," the president said.
Listen: In a March 19 interview, when asked what made him pivot on the gravity of the virus, Trump says, "To be honest with you, I wanted to always play it down."
Aside from exploring Trump's handling of the pandemic, Woodward's new book, "Rage," covers race relations, diplomacy with North Korea and a range of other issues that have arisen during the past two years.
The book also includes brutal assessments of Trump's conduct from former defense secretary Jim Mattis, former director of national intelligence Daniel Coats and others.
The book is based in part on 18 on-the-record interviews Woodward conducted with the president between December and July. Woodward writes that other quotes in the book were acquired through "deep background" conversations with sources in which information is divulged and exchanges recounted without sources being named.
"Trump never did seem willing to fully mobilize the federal government and continually seemed to push problems off on the states," Woodward writes. "There was no real management theory of the case or how to organize a massive enterprise to deal with one of the most complex emergencies the United States had ever faced."
Woodward questioned Trump repeatedly about the national reckoning on racial injustice. On June 3, two days after federal agents forcibly removed peaceful protesters from Lafayette Square to make way for Trump to stage a photo opportunity outside St. John's Episcopal Church, Trump called Woodward to boast about his "law and order" stance.
"We're going to get ready to send in the military slash National Guard to some of these poor bastards that don't know what they're doing, these poor radical lefts," Trump said.
In a second conversation, on June 19, Woodward asked the president about White privilege, noting that they were both White men of the same generation who had privileged upbringings. Woodward suggested that they had a responsibility to better "understand the anger and pain" felt by Black Americans.
"No," Trump replied, his voice described by Woodward as mocking and incredulous. "You really drank the Kool-Aid, didn't you? Just listen to you. Wow. No, I don't feel that at all."
Listen: In a June 19 interview, when asked if his privilege means he has to work harder to understand the anger fueling protests, Trump says, "You really drank the Kool-Aid didn't you?"
As Woodward pressed Trump to understand the plight of Black Americans after generations of discrimination, inequality and other atrocities, the president kept answering by pointing to economic numbers such as the pre-pandemic unemployment rate for Blacks and claiming, as he often has publicly, that he has done more for Blacks than any president except perhaps Abraham Lincoln.
In another conversation about race, on July 8, Trump complained about his lack of support among Black voters. "I've done a tremendous amount for the Black community," he told Woodward. "And, honestly, I'm not feeling any love."
They spoke again about race relations on June 22, when Woodward asked Trump whether he thinks there is "systemic or institutional racism in this country."
"Well, I think there is everywhere," Trump said. "I think probably less here than most places. Or less here than many places."
Asked by Woodward whether racism "is here" in the United States in a way that affects people's lives, Trump replied, "I think it is. And it's unfortunate. But I think it is."
Listen: In a June 22 interview, when asked whether there is institutional racism in the U.S., Trump says, "Well I think there is everywhere."
Trump shared with Woodward visceral reactions to several prominent Democrats of color. Upon seeing a shot of Sen. Kamala D. Harris of California, now the Democratic vice-presidential nominee, calmly and silently watching him deliver his State of the Union address, Trump remarked, "Hate! See the hate! See the hate!" Trump used the same phrase after an expressionless Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (N.Y.) appeared in the frame.
Trump was dismissive about former president Barack Obama and told Woodward he was inclined to refer to him by his first and middle names, "Barack Hussein," but wouldn't in his company to be "very nice."
"I don't think Obama's smart," Trump told Woodward. "I think he's highly overrated. And I don't think he's a great speaker." Trump added that North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un thought Obama was "an asshole."
"Rage" includes the first-reported excerpts of letters Trump exchanged with Kim, and quotes Trump in his interviews with Woodward using expletives to defend their pen-pal relationship. Even as U.S. intelligence chiefs warn that North Korea is unlikely to ever surrender its nuclear weapons and that Trump's approach is ineffective, the president told Woodward he is determined to stay the course and dismissively says the CIA has "no idea" how to handle North Korea.
"I met. Big fucking deal," Trump told Woodward, waving off criticism of his three face-to-face meetings with Kim. "It takes me two days. I met. I gave up nothing."
Foreign affairs experts say Trump gave up much — including by postponing and then scaling back the U.S. joint military exercises with South Korea that had long angered North Korea, as well as by granting Kim the international stature and legitimacy the North Korean regime has long craved.
Trump told Woodward he evaluates Kim and his nuclear arsenal like a real estate target: "It's really like, you know, somebody that's in love with a house and they just can't sell it."
Kim welcomed Trump's overtures with over-the-top prose in letters. Kim wrote that he wanted "another historic meeting between myself and Your Excellency reminiscent of a scene from a fantasy film." And he said his meetings with Trump were a "precious memory" that underscored how the "deep and special friendship between us will work as a magical force."
In another letter, Kim wrote to Trump, "I feel pleased to have formed good ties with such a powerful and preeminent statesman as Your Excellency." And in yet another, Kim reflected on "that moment of history when I firmly held Your Excellency's hand at the beautiful and sacred location as the whole world watched with great interest and hope to relive the honor of that day."
Trump was taken with Kim's flattery, Woodward writes, telling the author pridefully that Kim had addressed him as "Excellency." Trump remarked that he was awestruck meeting Kim for the first time in 2018 in Singapore, thinking to himself, "Holy shit," and finding Kim to be "far beyond smart." Trump also boasted to Woodward that Kim "tells me everything," including a graphic account of Kim having his uncle killed.
Trump did not share his letters to Kim — "those are so top secret," the president said — though Woodward writes that Trump sent Kim a copy of the New York Times featuring a picture of the two men on the front page. "Chairman, great picture of you, big time," Trump wrote on the paper in marker. (Trump falsely boasted to Woodward, "He never smiled before. I'm the only one he smiles with.")
Trump reflected on his relationships with authoritarian leaders generally, including Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. "It's funny, the relationships I have, the tougher and meaner they are, the better I get along with them," he told Woodward. "You know? Explain that to me someday, okay?"
In the midst of reflecting upon how close the United States had come in 2017 to war with North Korea, Trump revealed, "I have built a nuclear — a weapons system that nobody's ever had in this country before. We have stuff that you haven't even seen or heard about. We have stuff that Putin and Xi have never heard about before. There's nobody — what we have is incredible."
Woodward writes that anonymous sources later confirmed that the U.S. military had a secret new weapons system, but they would not provide details, and that the sources were surprised Trump had disclosed it.
The book documents private grumblings, periods of exasperation and wrestling about whether to quit among the so-called adults of the Trump orbit: Mattis, Coats and former secretary of state Rex Tillerson.
Mattis quietly went to Washington National Cathedral to pray about his concern for the nation's fate under Trump's command and, according to Woodward, told Coats, "There may come a time when we have to take collective action" since Trump is "dangerous. He's unfit."
In a separate conversation recounted by Woodward, Mattis told Coats, "The president has no moral compass," to which the director of national intelligence replied, "True. To him, a lie is not a lie. It's just what he thinks. He doesn't know the difference between the truth and a lie."
Woodward describes Coats's experience as especially tortured. Coats, a former senator from Indiana, was recruited into the administration by Vice President Pence, and his wife is quoted as recalling a dinner at the White House when she interacted with Pence.
"I just looked at him, like, how are you stomaching this?" Marsha Coats said, according to Woodward. "I just looked at him like, this is horrible. I mean, we made eye contact. I think he understood. And he just whispered in my ear, 'Stay the course.' "
Pence was the president's one constant booster publicly and privately in Woodward's book. When Coats considered resigning because of Trump's handling of Russia, Pence urged him to "look on the positive side of things that he's done. More attention on that. You can't go."
The loathing was mutual. "Not to mention my fucking generals are a bunch of pussies. They care more about their alliances than they do about trade deals," Trump told White House trade adviser Peter Navarro at one point, according to Woodward.
Jared Kushner, the president's son-in-law and senior adviser, is quoted by Woodward as saying, "The most dangerous people around the president are overconfident idiots," which Woodward interprets as a reference to Mattis, Tillerson and former National Economic Council director Gary Cohn.
Kushner was a frequent target of ire among Trump's Cabinet members, who saw him as untrustworthy and weak in dealing with heads of states. Tillerson found Kushner's warm dealings with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu "nauseating to watch. It was stomach churning," according to Woodward.
Kushner is quoted extensively in the book ruminating about his father-in-law and presidential power. Woodward writes that Kushner advised people that one of the most important guiding texts to understand the Trump presidency was "Alice in Wonderland," a novel about a young girl who falls through a rabbit hole. He singled out the Cheshire cat, whose strategy was endurance and persistence, not direction.
The book charts the Trump administration's failings and missteps on the pandemic, including the decisions and actions of Pottinger, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Robert Redfield, infectious-disease expert Anthony S. Fauci and others.
Fauci at one point tells others that the president "is on a separate channel" and unfocused in meetings, with "rudderless" leadership, according to Woodward. "His attention span is like a minus number," Fauci said, according to Woodward. "His sole purpose is to get reelected."
In one Oval Office meeting recounted by Woodward, after Trump had made false statements in a news briefing, Fauci said in front of him: "We can't let the president be out there being vulnerable, saying something that's going to come back and bite him." Pence, Kushner, chief of staff Mark Meadows and senior policy adviser Stephen Miller tensed up at once, Woodward writes, surprised Fauci would talk to Trump that way.
Woodward describes Fauci as particularly disappointed in Kushner for talking like a cheerleader as if everything was great. In June, as the virus was spreading wildly coast to coast and case numbers soared in Arizona, Florida, Texas and other states, Kushner said of Trump, "The goal is to get his head from governing to campaigning."
Woodward writes that Sen. Lindsey O. Graham (R-S.C.) suggested former president George W. Bush speak personally with Trump about global vaccine efforts, but that Bush demurred.
"No. No," Bush told Graham, according to Woodward. "He'd misconstrue anything I said."
In their final interview, on July 21, Trump vented to Woodward, "The virus has nothing to do with me. It's not my fault."

Why does smoke turn the skies orange and red? Normally, small atmospheric molecules scatter sunlight into a blue color. But larger smoke particles "scatter blue light and only allow yellow-orange-red light to reach the surface, causing skies to look orange.". Deep orange skies, 'snowing' ash as fire smoke swamps Bay Area. From San Francisco to Yosemite, social media was filled with images of ominous red and orange skies as smoke from a variety of fires blocked the sun.

Trump, who was elected president, is the ultimate decider and calls himself a genius, decided to talk on the record with Woodward 18 separate times, in many instances without any aides present or listening in. There is an epic amount of finger-pointing going on at the White House right now about who's to blame for a group of grown adults in serious positions in government - and in one case the president - talking to Woodward. A number of top advisers talked. Kushner is on the record extensively. The president spoke 18 times.

ENSURING THE FUTURE IS MADE IN AMERICA, BY AMERICANS
Joe spoke to America yesterday and laid a bold new vision to ensure the future will be made in America, by Americans.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=13VAvHV9Fks
Here are the many highlights of that plan:
• $400 billion Procurement Investment in clean energy and infrastructure plan to power new demand for American products, materials, and services and ensuring shipping on U.S.-flagged cargo carriers
• Retool and Revitalize American Manufacturers, with a focus on smaller manufacturers through incentives, additional resources, and new financing tools
• $300 Billion Investment in Research and Development (R&D) and Breakthrough Technologies, including electric vehicle technology, lightweight materials to 5G and artificial intelligence
• Ensure investments reach all of America and not limited by race, zip code, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, religion or national origin
• Pursue Pro-American Worker Tax and Trade Strategy to fix harmful policies of Trump Administration to give manufacturers and workers the fair shot they need to compete for jobs and market share
• Bring back critical Supply Chains to America to eliminate dependency on China or other countries for critical goods in a crisis
• Create 5 million new jobs in manufacturing and innovation
• Use government's purchasing power to buy American, boosting U.S. industries through historic procurement
• Tighten domestic content rules
• Eliminate loopholes which allow products to be stamped "Made in America"
• Close loophole currently allowing procurement officers within federal Agencies yo waive buy American rules without explanation or scrutiny
• End false advertising from companies that label products as Made in America even if they're coming from China or elsewhere
• Require all steel, iron, and manufactured products used in transportation projects are melted, mined, and manufactured in the U.S.
• Work with allies to modernize international trade rules and associated domestic regulations regarding government procurement, making sure U.S. and allies use their own taxpayer dollars to spur investment in their own countries
• Take steps to ensure American cargo is carried on U.S.-flag ships, leading to additional demand for American-made ships and U.S. merchant mariners
HISTORIC PROCUREMENT INVESTMENT
• Purchasing tens of billions of dollars of clean vehicles and products and ensure other countries will be buying the next generation of battery technology and electric vehicles manufactured by American workers
• Commit to purchasing American steel, cement, concrete, other building materials, and equipment, and in the process not only help rebuild our crumbling infrastructure and retrofit our buildings, but position our domestic companies to lead in resilient, sustainable production for the future
• Purchase critical medical supplies and pharmaceuticals, ensuring sufficient stockpiles to weather any crisis so Americans get best possible care
• Commit future purchases in advanced industries like cutting-edge telecommunications and artificial intelligence to only creating new, lasting American jobs and protecting our intellectual property and national security
• Require companies receiving procurement contracts, provide paid leave, fair overtime scheduling, pay at least $15 per hour and guarantee choice to join a union and bargain collectively
• Support small businesses including those owned by women and people of color
• Ensuring at least 23% of federal contracts get awarded to small businesses
RETOOL & REVITALIZE
• Provide capital for small to medium manufacturers to invest and compete
• Establish credit facility to supply capital, especially to smaller manufacturers, so aging factories can modernize, compete, and reduce carbon
• Quadruple Manufacturing Extension Partnership to help America's small and medium-sized manufacturers compete for Buy American contracts and modernize (Trump tried to eliminate this program - Biden will quadruple it)
• Provide manufacturing tax credit to Retool and Revitalize
• Projects receiving credit will have to benefit local workers and communities, meeting strong labor standards, including paying workers a prevailing wage, employing workers trained in registered apprenticeship programs
• Expand Manufacturing Innovation partnerships
FEDERALLY FUNDED RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT
• Accelerated Research & Development investment of $300 billion over 4 years to create millions of good jobs and to secure our global leadership in the most critical and competitive new industries and technologies
• Major increases in federal R&D spending, including new National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, Department of Energy, Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H), Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), and other peer-reviewed science research grants to colleges and universities
• Investments in breakthrough technology R&D programs including 5G, artificial intelligence, advanced materials, biotechnology, and clean vehicles
• Competitive capital financing to encourage small businesses to commercialize cutting-edge technology, such as a scaled-up version of the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program, "America's seed fund," which provides capital to small businesses pursuing R&D commercialization in concert with research institutions
• Funds for creation or expansion of technical training programs around digital, statistical, and technology skills, funded by the Labor Department
• Infrastructure for educational institutions and partners to expand research
• Ensure technological change benefits workers, creates jobs, and strengthens the middle class
• Ensure U.S. government captures a share of the royalties of high-profitable products developed with federal R&D funding
• Give workers a voice in innovation and are first in line to benefit
USE FULL U.S. TALENTS & INVEST IN COMMUNITIES AND WORKERS
The economic opportunities from investment in innovation are not being shared throughout the U.S. - 25% percent of venture capital investment is concentrated in the San Francisco area, and 75% flows to just three states: California, New York, and Massachusetts. There are a significant number of diverse communities across every region of the country which can become new centers of job-creating innovation and production.
• Direct new federal investments to more than 50 communities across our nation that have the capabilities but have too often been overlooked
• Creating at least 200 new centers serving as research incubators and connect students underrepresented in fields critical to our nation's future
• Dedicating additional and increased priority funding streams at federal agencies for grants and contracts for HBCUs and MSIs
• Requiring any federal research grants to universities with an endowment of over $1 billion to form a meaningful partnership and enter into a 10% minimum subcontract with an HBCU, TCU, or MSI
• Require competitive grant programs give similar universities opportunities to compete against each other, for example, ensuring that HBCUs only compete against HBCUs
JOB & EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITY
• Career and technical education for high school students
• Free high-quality training programs
• Free community college and free tuition for 4-year degrees for families earning less than $125,000
• Invest $50 billion in high-quality training programs that give workers a chance to earn an industry-recognized credential without debt
• Create and expand community college-business-union partnerships to develop effective training programs
• Scale up work-based learning programs with a focus on building a diverse workforce, through opportunities like registered apprenticeships, pre-apprenticeship, and other labor-management training programs
• Work with unions to bring forward a new generation of registered apprenticeships in fields ranging from technology to manufacturing to care work, allowing workers who have lost their jobs during the pandemic to train for jobs of the future while earning a decent income
• Help develop pathways for diverse workers to access training and career opportunities
• Extend unemployment Insurance benefits for the duration of training, up-skilling, and reskilling programs while unemployment rates are elevated
• Invest $70 billion in Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Tribal Colleges and Universities, and Minority-Serving Institutions
• Invest $35 billion in HBCUs, TCUs, and MSIs to create research centers of excellence, build high-tech labs and other facilities, and strengthen graduate programs in fields including STEM
• Tackle workplace discrimination and harassment keeping so many women, especially women of color, from earning equal pay or fully realizing their professional goals
PRO-AMERICAN-WORKER TAX AND TRADE STRATEGY
• Take aggressive trade enforcement actions against China or any other country seeking to undercut American manufacturing through unfair practices, including currency manipulation, anti-competitive dumping, state-owned company abuses, or unfair subsidies
• Coordinated effort to pressure the Chinese government and other trade abusers to follow the rules and hold them to account when they do not
• Confront foreign efforts to steal American intellectual property
• Address state-sponsored cyber espionage against American companies
• Set forth clear demands and specific consequences if China's government does not cease cyber espionage
• Develop new sanctions authorities against Chinese firms which steal U.S. technology, which will cut them off from accessing the U.S. market and financial system
• Establish a "claw-back" provision to force a company to return public investments and tax benefits when they close down jobs here and send them overseas
• Apply carbon adjustment fee against countries who are failing to meet their Paris Climate commitments
• Reverse tax policies that encourage outsourcing
• End incentives in the Trump tax giveaway that allow multinationals to dramatically lower taxes on income earned overseas and allow the largest, most profitable companies to pay no tax at all
• Confront global tax secrecy and avoidance, taking on individuals and businesses that stash their profits in tax havens to avoid paying their fair share
• Tighten anti-inversion rules that Obama-Biden put in place and which Trump has sought to weaken
• Support strong and independent trade unions here in the United States and in every one of our trading partners
• Enforce existing labor provisions and aggressively push for strong and enforceable labor provisions in any trade deal his administration
BRING BACK CRITICAL SUPPLY CHAINS
• Never again face shortages of critical products such as medical equipment when confronting a national crisis.
• Put Americans to work making critical products, from medical equipment and supplies to semiconductors and communications technology, here in the United States
• Close critical U.S. supply chain gaps by immediately directing a comprehensive and ongoing process to evaluate and protect key U.S. supply chains, starting in the first
• Leverage federal buying, including the Defense Production Act, BARDA, and federal procurement, to make sure that we make critical products in America
• Change the tax code to eliminate the incentives for pharmaceutical and other companies to move production overseas and establish new incentives for companies to make critical products in the U.S
• Rebuild critical stockpiles, ensure adequate surge manufacturing capacity in times of crisis, and regularly review supply chain vulnerabilities
• Work with allies to reduce their dependence on competitors like China while modernizing international trade rules to secure U.S. and allied supply chains

"We're in an unprecedented fire event," Oregon Gov. Kate Brown said Tuesday on Twitter. "Several significant, growing fires across the state continue to spread due to hot, dry weather and high winds. Oregonians' lives are at risk. Follow evacuation orders, try to reduce your smoke exposure – and take care of each other." | Washington Gov. Jay Inslee said on Tuesday that fires scorched a total of 330,000 acres in a 24-hour span, a number that is higher than what was burned in 12 of the 18 previous fire seasons in the state. Like Brown, he noted the unparalleled nature of the wildfire outbreak. "It's an unprecedented and heart-breaking event,″ Inslee said at a news conference, according to The AP. "The list of fires is long.″ | The Washington Department of Ecology said Wednesday morning that much of the of the state was dealing with unhealthy air quality levels and recommended that residents limit time outdoors. The wildfire smoke is so thick that it is blocking out the sun in parts of Oregon and California. | It's been a hellish wildfire season across the West, with a record-setting number of acres burned in California, in addition to the unusually active seasons in Oregon and Washington. Numerous large blazes have also scorched Colorado, Idaho, Montana and Utah. Red flag warnings this week stretched from the California-Mexico border to the Washington-Canada border. The unusually strong wind event that permeated throughout the Northwest was a product of a vigorous storm system that also brought heavy snow to parts of the Rockies.

I Need You to Care That Our Country Is on Fire. Would you feel more urgency about climate change if all you could see was smoke?
By Charlie Warzel
Sept. 9, 2020
If you've never experienced a fire season before, it's hard to explain the emotional, physical and sensory effects of having the world immolate before your eyes.
I spent decades with only a passing knowledge of wildfires. I'd read about smoke jumpers and fire seasons, sure. I'd seen the news videos of planes and helicopters dumping water on burning hillsides. I have distinct memories of images of the California countryside at night with a raging fire threatening a neighborhood development and reports of evacuations and deaths. It seemed awful and cruel and arbitrary — but also like something happening in a distant part of the world. I empathized, but I didn't understand.

Then I moved West. I arrived in my new home in Montana in 2017 only 10 days before a July thunderstorm tore through the Bitterroot Valley and ignited a fire that burned for two months and devastated 53,902 acres of land 20 miles from my home.
If you're lucky, it comes on slowly. You awake one morning and you notice the smell. For me, it was the distinct smell of a campfire having just been extinguished. It's an uncanny sensation that doesn't fade. The air is hazy; the blue sky fades to a cloudy white in the direction of the fire. Before long, the smell and the haze increase. For me, a dull headache begins alongside a tickle in the back of my throat, similar to the way I feel when spring allergies begin.
If the fire isn't contained, every hour gets worse from there, and the world takes on an apocalyptic quality. That first Montana summer, I remember sitting in the bleachers of Missoula's minor league baseball stadium. At the beer stand, I gazed out across the valley and to see an unmoving column of smoke shaped like the funnel of a tornado thousands of feet high.
Its plume widened until it mingled with the clouds above, forming an oppressive ashy dome over my town. Behind it the sun set, drawing out otherworldly reds and yellows. It felt like living on an uninhabitable planet. They never told me that the sunsets at the end of the world would be so striking.
Then even those colors fade. You wake up in darkness and you're left with soot — in the sky, on your car, your windows, your driveway, your trees, your lawn. Eventually, those allergy feelings turn into a deeper malaise, which is fed by the sepia skies that resemble nuclear winter.

Leaving the house feels both pointless and dangerous. My first fire season, I was stopped during a run by a police officer who told me to go home immediately. It simply wasn't safe to be breathing the air outside, he told me.
This is what happens if you're one of the lucky ones who are affected only by the byproduct of those raging fires. I consider myself fortunate to have never seen one from more than a dozen or so miles away. But for those who encounter them — or have to live in their proximity, and grapple with the long-term health ramifications — it is hell on earth.
https://www.mtpr.org/post/lung-function-decline-continued-one-year-after-rice-ridge-fire-research-shows
At a biometrics conference in 2019, I listened to a Department of Homeland Security official give a presentation on the Camp Fire in Paradise, Calif., which was fueled by nearly 90-mile-an-hour wind gusts. He was there to talk about the use of cutting-edge technology to identify the charred remains of some of the fire's more than 80 victims. The presenter's anecdotes included the story of one couple who awoke in the night because their Amazon Alexa smart speaker was chirping that it had been disconnected. When they came to, they saw two-thirds of their house ablaze. They managed to escape; their pets and possessions did not.
Since I moved West, I've been preoccupied with this question: Would Americans feel a greater sense of alarm about our rapidly warming planet and the disastrous, perhaps irreversible effects of climate change if everyone could experience a fire season in person? Would cable news hosts devote the same nonstop coverage to fires as they do for hurricanes if more of their executives woke up each morning to falling ash? Would more lawmakers care if it looked like this outside the Capitol at high noon?

The American West does not have a monopoly on climate-related disasters. Hurricane seasons grow worse each year and devastating earthquakes loom. The flooding in the Midwest and storms like the recent derecho in Iowa are calamities that deserve equal attention. They're also urgent alarm bells. Everyone on earth l right now is experiencing unpredictable and dire weather. No region is alone in experiencing the tragedy of our dying planet.
https://www.nytimes.com/2020/08/22/us/iowa-derecho-storm.html
I'm not so naΓ―ve as to think that all Americans would, say, support a Green New Deal if they had to confront a California fire season head-on — that's not even the case for California residents! But there is a surrealness to these wildfires and their profound impact that remains difficult to explain to anyone who hasn't experienced them.
Unlike a storm that makes landfall and barrels through, leaving destruction in its path, the encroaching infernos descend for days, weeks, even months, and become part of our lives. It feels both like the end of days and like the new normal — a stultifying Instagram filter fitted over our eyes at all times.
The point of this column isn't to guilt people for where they live or what they've experienced, but to convey the desperation that so many Americans are feeling right now. It's an anxiety that deepens each year. One that turns cloudless summer days in July into harbingers of misery. It's a psychological toll, as much as it is physical. One that, while you're living through it, renders it difficult to see a healthy future for the earth through all the smoke.

2 million Texans have registered to vote since 2016. Beto O'Rourke shares why that's important for this election | Democrats in Texas are operating on three major fronts for the 2020 election: president, U.S. Senate and majority in the Texas House. One of the three, O'Rourke told the Jasons, is more than wishful thinking. "The state House is the most exciting and will be the most impactful and also happens to be the most realistic," said O'Rourke. Currently, Democrats are down nine seats in the state House, after picking up 12 in 2018, when O'Rourke ran against Cruz. "But in 2018, I also happened to win more votes than did Ted Cruz in nine of those state house districts that we need to pick up this year," O'Rourke said. "So, you know, by the math not only can we do this, in some ways, we've done this before." Part of his enthusiasm is fueled by the fact that there are so many new voters in Texas. "Remember, more than two million of our fellow Texans have registered to vote just since the last presidential election cycle. Two million. I mean that sounds crazy even by Texas numbers. We do everything bigger here," the former Congressman said. "You have those net two million new voters in a state that is rapidly diversifying and changing. And this is a brand-new electorate that you're looking at." O'Rourke said he's been in touch with the Biden campaign, pleading the case for a Texas-sized investment in the state. | "One of the things that M.J. told me afterwards is she said pre-COVID, pre, you know, lockdown, at her events that people would physically come to, it was the already converted. It was preaching to the choir," said O'Rourke. "When she holds these virtual town halls now, she's getting a lot of curious independents, perhaps some disaffected Republicans. In other words, she may be expanding the electorate that she can appeal to."

The FBI is warning police nationwide to expect an increase in election-related threats — and, potentially, violent attacks — from domestic extremists, according to a recent bulletin reviewed by Yahoo News. Domestic violent extremists "across the ideological spectrum likely will continue to plot against government and election-related targets to express their diverse grievances involving government policies and actions," the FBI said in a recent election-focused bulletin sent to law enforcement across the country. | While the bulletin, which is dated Aug. 21, refers only to extremists and does not specify left- or right-wing groups, two of the cases cited in the document are individuals or groups concerned about a potential Trump electoral loss. The FBI refers to one case from this summer when "members of a self-described violent extremist militia" discussed plans to attack elected officials or storm "the state capitol building while the legislature was in session, with the intent to kill all inside. "Members stated the need to act prior to a possible democratic presidential administration, due to the belief that stricter firearms regulations would be enacted quickly thereafter, according to a FBI reporting," the bulletin states. In a separate case from late last year, an unnamed Ohio-based extremist discussed plans to set off a homemade bomb in the hopes of starting a race war. The extremist, the FBI bulletin reads, "stated an intent for his group of followers to be operationally ready for the 2024 election, based on a belief that the President would win re-election in 2020; if the President did not win in 2020, however, the plan would be accelerated, according to FBI reporting."

Pelosi: Climate change will be early part of Democrats' 2021 agenda. Pelosi specifically singled out the Climate Action Now legislation, passed by the House in May, which would recommit the U.S. to the Paris Agreement on climate change. She pointed to the Democrats' "Moving Forward" green infrastructure package, which would require states to account for climate change before undertaking projects and meet certain greenhouse gas emission goals when they accept funding. Pelosi also highlighted a report by the House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis that Democrats and scientists see as a "road map" for fighting climate change. | But on Thursday, Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) also turned his attention to the fires wreaking havoc in the West as he rolled out Senate Democrats' THRIVE Act addressing climate change, racial injustice and the economy. "The proof of the urgency of this situation is literally in the air around us right now. Wildfires are rampaging across the West, across an area the size of the entire state of Connecticut, polluting the lungs of countless Americans. If anyone needed any proof of how disastrously and quickly climate change is affecting our globe, look out West," Schumer told reporters. "Right now, millions of Americans are witnessing climate change in the ash and orange skies outside their windows. These catastrophic events have instigated and exacerbated climate change, and they're not new," Schumer continued. "Worse yet, Trump and the GOP poured gasoline on the fire by recklessly ripping apart vital environmental regulatory protections and recklessly pursuing more, not less, fossil fuel consumption production."

Heartbreak after heartbreak... Rockets just can't catch a break
Harden legacy will be so tarnished if he can't at least get into a Finals...
Rockets look like they're done and like they want to head home. Maybe they're exhausted from the previous series or maybe they're just demoralized due to Westbrook's struggles. They look cooked. No fire or hunger in a must win game.
I wonder if AD falls down doing regular house chores. Maybe he's just very sensitive to contact

Guess who's not showing respect to victims on 9/11, Trump. Guess who's going to two of the three sites of 9/11, Biden. I'm sure Trump will dedicate one of his putts to all the fallen police.
Shanksville, Pennsylvania was the "flight that fought back" site.
While mumbling the pledge of allegiance at Shanksville, Trump didn't even mouth the words"under g/d" which is a weird thing for a Republican President to do on 9/11. He stayed on script for close to all of it. Though with his "acting Presidential" it came off cold, tired, disconnected and his inability to read made it just tedious. He really had no personal emotion in the speech which seems alien since most people have a memory or sincere feeling about the tragedy and attack.
Perfect timing for this story to come out: I hope everyone reflects today about the brave people that ran into the towers to save lives and then sees how Trump doesn't give a fuck about them: Trump administration siphoned money away from 9/11 fund. The Trump administration siphoned nearly $4 million away from a program that tracks and treats FDNY firefighters and medics suffering from 9/11 related illnesses. The Treasury Department stopped payments - nearly four years ago - meant to cover medical services for firefighters, emergency medical technicians and paramedics treated by the FDNY World Trade Center Health Program, documents obtained by The News reveal. The payments were authorized and made by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, which oversees the program. But instead of sending the funds to the city, the Treasury kept the money.

9/11: When Trump bragged he now had 'tallest building' in downtown Manhattan hours after World Trade Center collapsed | In the hours following the collapse of the Twin Towers on September 11, 2001, New Jersey's local TV channel WWOR had Donald Trump on the line. Known primarily at the time as a real-estate owner, Mr Trump was asked about one of his own buildings situated near the World Trade Center site. It was just a minute into his phone interview, and the multi-millionaire spoke about the size of his property. He said: "40 Wall Street actually was the second tallest building in downtown Manhattan, and it was actually, before the World Trade Center, was the tallest. And then, when they built the World Trade Center, it became known as the second tallest. "And now it's the tallest."

The Ukraine state-owned natural gas company caught up in Trump's impeachment investigation has appointed U.S. businessman Robert Bensh - pushed by former Energy Secretary Rick Perry - to its board | The appointment adds to questions about Perry's role in Ukrainian energy politics and whether the former Texas governor had pressured the government there to buy U.S. energy supplies to win favor with the Trump administration. Perry had originally pushed Naftogaz to accept Bensh and another Perry associate, Texas oil and gas executive with ties to Ukraine, Michael Bleyzer, onto its board. More recently, Time.com and WNYC-ProPubliica on Thursday reported that federal prosecutors had probed Perry's efforts to broker a $20 billion contract for a company called Louisiana Natural Gas Exports to deliver U.S. liquefied natural gas to Naftogaz. The report said Bensh had promoted the company as one that the Ukrainian government could hire to deliver natural gas to the country.

Nobody is appropriately gauging how quickly racist antisemitic mentally ill deranged conspiracy theory FBI-designed domestic terrorist entity QAnon (and Q by other names) has taken over among suburban and rural white women. It is everywhere. I, too, am mentally and emotionally struggling with how many people have come to believe something simultaneously so stupid and dangerous. But pretending like it isn't happening and that we're better than this isn't working. It's a crisis happening in a mom group text near you. QAnon is legitimately a national security threat at this point. People are getting radicalized from the stuff. Radicalize people commit acts of terror. This is such a wake up call. We mistakenly say that Gen Z and Millennials are more politically aware...but with Q they are the ones leading this. This is a "young movement" rooted in social media. Jim Watkins, creator of 8/4chan, created it. And this is why Trumpism is likely to win. Again. The same people that were obsessed with the idea of satanic ritual cults in the 80's and 90's are QAnon. These people vote at all times, more than Democrats, and they vote Republican at all times, unlike Democrats.

Forget off ball movement, Harden has never been big on that but what's disappointed me more this particular series is his activity when he actually does have the ball. He literally stands there holding the ball waiting for the trap to arrive, wasting precious shot clock time. The Lakers know this and often don't bring the double until there's like 5 seconds left on the shot clock.
All Harden can do then is pass to a contested shooter to chuck up a prayer 3 pointer because the Lakers have been good at their defensive rotations off double teams. The Rockets have been at their best this playoffs when the ball is moving and Harden doesn't seem to have any interest in that this series. Harden doesn't exactly have a lot of weapons in his arsenal, though he is really really good with what he has. The problem is in playoffs, you will be against the same opponents 4-7 games consecutively. At some point they will lock into your rhythm and you need to adapt, which Harden (and the Rockets) can't.

Your question has an underlying assumption. Namely, that people are rational and sift through data to find the best possible course of action. People are not rational. They navigate life with built up worldviews. Some environmentalists worldviews do not include the idea of controlled burns. They don't see the logic of the situation supported by data. they just see their worldview.

By Tuesday, as many Americans will have died of covid19 since the morning of this 11th Sept 2020 as died on 11th Sept 2001. Yet there will be no reading of their names, no wider marking their deaths, no collective action from the government to care for the survivors and their families.
From 2019: Is This the End of Recycling? Americans are consuming more and more stuff. Now that other countries won't take our papers and plastics, they're ending up in the trash. After decades of earnest public-information campaigns, Americans are finally recycling. Airports, malls, schools, and office buildings across the country have bins for plastic bottles and aluminum cans and newspapers. In some cities, you can be fined if inspectors discover that you haven't recycled appropriately. But now much of that carefully sorted recycling is ending up in the trash. For decades, we were sending the bulk of our recycling to China—tons and tons of it, sent over on ships to be made into goods such as shoes and bags and new plastic products. But last year, the country restricted imports of certain recyclables, including mixed paper—magazines, office paper, junk mail—and most plastics. Waste-management companies across the country are telling towns, cities, and counties that there is no longer a market for their recycling. These municipalities have two choices: pay much higher rates to get rid of recycling, or throw it all away. Most are choosing the latter. "We are doing our best to be environmentally responsible, but we can't afford it," said Judie Milner, the city manager of Franklin, New Hampshire. Since 2010, Franklin has offered curbside recycling and encouraged residents to put paper, metal, and plastic in their green bins. When the program launched, Franklin could break even on recycling by selling it for $6 a ton. Now, Milner told me, the transfer station is charging the town $125 a ton to recycle, or $68 a ton to incinerate. One-fifth of Franklin's residents live below the poverty line, and the city government didn't want to ask them to pay more to recycle, so all those carefully sorted bottles and cans are being burned. Milner hates knowing that Franklin is releasing toxins into the environment, but there's not much she can do. "Plastic is just not one of the things we have a market for," she said. The same thing is happening across the country. Broadway, Virginia, had a recycling program for 22 years, but recently suspended it after Waste Management told the town that prices would increase by 63 percent, and then stopped offering recycling pickup as a service. "It almost feels illegal, to throw plastic bottles away," the town manager, Kyle O'Brien, told me. Without a market for mixed paper, bales of the stuff started to pile up in Blaine County, Idaho; the county eventually stopped collecting it and took the 35 bales it had hoped to recycle to a landfill. The town of Fort Edward, New York, suspended its recycling program in July and admitted it had actually been taking recycling to an incinerator for months. Determined to hold out until the market turns around, the nonprofit Keep Northern Illinois Beautiful has collected 400,000 tons of plastic. But for now, it is piling the bales behind the facility where it collects plastic. This end of recycling comes at a time when the United States is creating more waste than ever. In 2015, the most recent year for which national data are available, America generated 262.4 million tons of waste, up 4.5 percent from 2010 and 60 percent from 1985. That amounts to nearly five pounds per person a day. New York City collected 934 tons of metal, plastic, and glass a day from residents last year, a 33 percent increase from 2013. | Americans are going to have to come to terms with a new reality: All those toothpaste tubes and shopping bags and water bottles that didn't exist 50 years ago need to go somewhere, and creating this much waste has a price we haven't had to pay so far. "We've had an ostrich-in-the-sand approach to the entire system," said Jeremy O'Brien, director of applied research at the Solid Waste Association of North America, a trade association. "We're producing a lot of waste ourselves, and we should take care of it ourselves." | About 25 percent of what ends up in the blue bins is contaminated, according to the National Waste & Recycling Association. For decades, we've been throwing just about whatever we wanted—wire hangers and pizza boxes and ketchup bottles and yogurt containers—into the bin and sending it to China, where low-paid workers sorted through it and cleaned it up. That's no longer an option. And in the United States, at least, it rarely makes sense to employ people to sort through our recycling so that it can be made into new material, because virgin plastics and paper are still cheaper in comparison. Even in San Francisco, often lauded for its environmentalism, waste-management companies struggle to keep recycling uncontaminated. I visited a state-of-the-art facility operated by San Francisco's recycling provider, Recology, where million-dollar machines separate aluminum from paper from plastic from garbage. But as the Recology spokesman Robert Reed walked me through the plant, he kept pointing out nonrecyclables gumming up the works. Workers wearing masks and helmets grabbed laundry baskets off a fast-moving conveyor belt of cardboard as some non-cardboard items escaped their gloved hands. Recology has to stop another machine twice a day so a technician can pry plastic bags from where they've clogged up the gear. Cleaning up recycling means employing people to slowly go through materials, which is expensive. Jacob Greenberg, a commissioner in Blaine County, Idaho, told me that the county's mixed-paper recycling was about 90 percent clean. But its paper broker said the mixed paper needed to be 99 percent clean for anyone to buy it, and elected officials didn't want to hike fees to get there. "At what point do you feel like you're spending more money than what it takes for people to feel good about recycling?" he said. | If we can somehow figure out how to better sort recycling, some U.S. markets for plastics and paper may emerge. But selling it domestically will still be harder than it would be in a place such as China, where a booming manufacturing sector has constant demand for materials. The viability of recycling varies tremendously by locale; San Francisco can recycle its glass back into bottles in six weeks, according to Recology, while many other cities are finding that glass is so heavy and breaks so easily that it is nearly impossible to truck it to a place that will recycle it. Akron, Ohio, is just one of many cities that have ended glass recycling since the China policy changes. For now, it's still often cheaper for companies to manufacture using new materials than recycled ones. Michael Rohwer, a director at Business for Social Responsibility, works with companies that try to be more environmentally friendly. He told me that recycled plastic costs pennies more than new plastic, and those pennies add up when you're manufacturing millions of items. Items made of different types of plastic nearly always end up in the trash, because recyclers can't separate the plastics from one another—Reed equates it with trying to get the sugar and eggs out of a cake after you've baked it. But because companies don't bear the costs of disposal, they have no incentive to manufacture products out of material that will be easier to recycle. The best way to fix recycling is probably persuading people to buy less stuff, which would also have the benefit of reducing some of the upstream waste created when products are made. But that's a hard sell in the United States, where consumer spending accounts for 68 percent of the GDP. The strong economy means more people have more spending money, too, and often the things they buy, such as new phones, and the places they shop, such as Amazon, are designed to sell them even more things. The average American spent 7 percent more on food and 8 percent more on personal-care products and services in 2017 than in 2016, according to government data. Some places are still trying to get people to buy less. The city of San Francisco, for instance, is trying to get residents to think of a fourth r beyond "reduce, reuse, and recycle"—"refuse." It wants people to be smarter about what they purchase, avoiding plastic bottles and straws and other disposable goods. But it's been tough in a place centered on acquiring the newest technology. "This is our big challenge: How do you take a culture like San Francisco and get people excited about less?" Debbie Raphael, the director of the San Francisco Department of the Environment, told me. The city passed an ordinance that required that 10 percent of beverages sold be available in reusable containers, and it is trying to make reuse "hip" through an online campaign and dedicated website, Raphael said. San Francisco and other Bay Area cities have banned plastic bags and plastic straws, but that option isn't available in many other parts of the country, where recently passed state laws prevent cities from banning products.

From today Sept 2020: Here's the basic problem: All used plastic can be turned into new things, but picking it up, sorting it out and melting it down is expensive. Plastic also degrades each time it is reused, meaning it can't be reused more than once or twice. On the other hand, new plastic is cheap. It's made from oil and gas, and it's almost always less expensive and of better quality to just start fresh. All of these problems have existed for decades, no matter what new recycling technology or expensive machinery has been developed. In all that time, less than 10 percent of plastic has ever been recycled. But the public has known little about these difficulties. It could be because that's not what they were told. Starting in the 1990s, the public saw an increasing number of commercials and messaging about recycling plastic. "The bottle may look empty, yet it's anything but trash," says one ad from 1990 showing a plastic bottle bouncing out of a garbage truck. "It's full of potential. ... We've pioneered the country's largest, most comprehensive plastic recycling program to help plastic fill valuable uses and roles." These commercials carried a distinct message: Plastic is special, and the consumer should recycle it. It may have sounded like an environmentalist's message, but the ads were paid for by the plastics industry, made up of companies like Exxon, Chevron, Dow, DuPont and their lobbying and trade organizations in Washington. Industry companies spent tens of millions of dollars on these ads and ran them for years, promoting the benefits of a product that, for the most part, was buried, was burned or, in some cases, wound up in the ocean. Documents show industry officials knew this reality about recycling plastic as far back as the 1970s. Many of the industry's old documents are housed in libraries, such as the one on the grounds of the first DuPont family home in Delaware. Others are with universities, where former industry leaders sent their records. At Syracuse University, there are boxes of files from a former industry consultant. And inside one of them is a report written in April 1973 by scientists tasked with forecasting possible issues for top industry executives. Recycling plastic, it told the executives, was unlikely to happen on a broad scale. "There is no recovery from obsolete products," it says. It says pointedly: Plastic degrades with each turnover. "A degradation of resin properties and performance occurs during the initial fabrication, through aging, and in any reclamation process," the report told executives. Recycling plastic is "costly," it says, and sorting it, the report concludes, is "infeasible." And there are more documents, echoing decades of this knowledge, including one analysis from a top official at the industry's most powerful trade group. "The costs of separating plastics ... are high," he tells colleagues, before noting that the cost of using oil to make plastic is so low that recycling plastic waste "can't yet be justified economically."

A lot of great players and teams didn't win the title. Look at the Nash Era Suns from 05-10. T-Mac and Yao Rockets, Lob City Clippers, Gary Payton-Kemp-Schrempf Sonics, Reggie Miller Pacers, Charles Barkley Suns, Tim Hardaway-Mitch Richmond Warriors, Brad Daughtry-Price Cavs, Jason Kidd- VC- Kenyon Martin Nets, etc.
I, a Golden State Warrior Steph/Klay/Dray/+KD fan, have now experienced the closing of two doors: the Dubbs era (that's over, we all felt it when Golden State finished second last season and finished with endless serious injuries and the departure of KD and the departure of their best secondary players and the departure of their best bench players), and the Harden-D'Antoni-Morey era Rockets. Thank You Houston Rockets for NEVER giving up. For being a role model of consistency (winning records, playoff fixture, Harden breaking records, etc). You went for it. In a 5 year brief block of time when almost all but two teams (Cavaliers, Rockets) decided to wait out the Golden State dynasty and sneer at them, James Harden and Mike D'Antoni and Morey went for it. The Rockets constantly took big swings at the Golden State Warriors, and took big swings at the technical structure of NBA playmaking itself, constantly challenging fundamentals and techniques and the rule book itself, pushing the technical playmaking to the extreme edge. It's a shame James Harden and the Rockets are hated on so much. They went for it all at a time teams were punting for a few years until Golden State's run was over. (By the way, the Warriors aren't going away: Steph and Klay and Dray are back next season, and they make shake things up before the new season begins). NBA fans should be respecting what the Rockets accomplished, especially Rockets fans and fans of individual Rockets players: the Rockets have been one of the most dominant, fearsome, winning teams to play the last five years. They have winning seasons, they deliver an endless variety of spectacular play all regular season long, they reduced the referees to tears, they are a playoff fixture, and they've advanced deep into the playoffs. They nearly broke Golden State a few years ago. They never quit, they played the highest most elite level of basketball they could, and succeeded. The Harden-era Rockets will never be forgotten. The Rockets had a run of solid to elite basketball for about 8 years now without blatantly tanking.
James Harden on constantly falling short in the playoffs: "It's very, very frustrating. Especially with the amount of work that I individually put in. I'm going to keep chipping away. We're a piece away. We're going to keep trying to grow and put the right pieces around me and Russ."

Amazing how many times people in red states say this unironically while taking money from blue states which are economic powerhouses. And many of these older people take Social Security while pledging to vote for a man who will destroy it for the next generation. I don't know if they believe any of this or they're just awful people. Wanted to deny education to someone else is just dumb, cruel and making your own country worse off. And those immigrants aren't getting a free ride anyway, dumbasses. Those immigrants that work for very low wages keep your costs at the grocery store down. They make the economy of California actually workable so you can take those blue state revenues for your own state that doesn't have a booming economy. People sure like to ruin their lives with dumb circlejerk thinking.

That history has shaped how people distinguish between what helped lift their families and government support today, said Tim Kelly, who chairs the history department at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe and who cowrote Hope in Hard Times. "In my experience hardworking is a stand-in for white in Westmoreland County and Western Pennsylvania," Kelly said. "So the story that Norvelters tell themselves is: 'Our grandparents were poor, but they were hardworking. And they needed assistance, but they didn't need a handout.' " "They've [made] a clear distinction between hardworking and the undeserving, the lazy," Kelly added. "And I think that's a stand-in for racism today."

Overlooked: Biden writes op-ed on Iran policy: This past month has proven that Trump's Iran policy is a dangerous failure. At the United Nations, Trump could not rally a single one of America's closest allies to extend the UN arms embargo on Iran. Next, Trump tried to unilaterally reimpose UN sanctions on Iran, only to have virtually all the UN security council members unite to reject his gambit. Now there are reports that Iran has stockpiled 10 times as much enriched uranium as it had when President Barack Obama and I left office. | I have no illusions about the challenges the regime in Iran poses to America's security interests, to our friends and partners and to its own people. But there is a smart way to be tough on Iran, and there is Trump's way. He ignored our closest allies and walked away -- alone, without a plan -- from a deal that put the world's eyes and ears inside Iran's nuclear program and was verifiably blocking Iran's pathways to a nuclear weapon. | Because Trump violated an agreement that America itself negotiated and then acted recklessly, other world powers now devote their energies to opposing US policy instead of working alongside us to counter Tehran. This mix of confrontation and isolation will leave us with the worst of both worlds: no arms embargo or snapback of UN sanctions, but also no deal to constrain Iran's nuclear program -- and no plan except to recklessly double down. Five years ago, Iran was a bad regional actor requiring active deterrence and pushback. But it had not conducted a major attack on US forces in the region in years. Since Trump took office, Iran or its proxies have killed two American service members and a US contractor, severely injured more than 100 US troops, damaged Saudi oil facilities and disabled commercial ships transiting the Gulf. Before Trump, years went by without a militia rocket attack on US facilities in Iraq. Now they happen regularly. Instead of restoring deterrence, Trump has emboldened Iran. Instead of ending "endless wars," Trump has repeatedly brought America to the brink of a new one. If this is what Trump considers success, I would hate to see what failure looks like. The good news is that there remains a better way. | Second, I will offer Tehran a credible path back to diplomacy. If Iran returns to strict compliance with the nuclear deal, the United States would rejoin the agreement as a starting point for follow-on negotiations. With our allies, we will work to strengthen and extend the nuclear deal's provisions, while also addressing other issues of concern. This includes working aggressively to free unjustly detained Americans and calling out the regime for its ongoing violations of human rights, including the execution of wrestler Navid Afkari this week and the wrongful detention of political prisoners, such as human rights lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh. And we will work to help our partners reduce tensions and help end regional conflicts, including the disastrous war in Yemen. I will also take steps to make sure US sanctions do not hinder Iran's fight against Covid-19. And on day one, I will repeal Trump's disgraceful travel ban targeting a number of Muslim-majority countries, among others. Third, we will continue to push back against Iran's destabilizing activities, which threaten our friends and partners in the region. Drawing on the record-setting US-Israel security assistance agreement signed when I was Vice President, America will also work closely with Israel to ensure it can defend itself against Iran and its proxies. We will continue to use targeted sanctions against Iran's human rights abuses, its support for terrorism and ballistic missile program.

Why flipping Texas is possible and why it matters even if it's not successful.
Should the Biden campaign spend a significant amount of resources in Texas? YED. But I don't think they need to. Here's my arguments for why Texas could flip, I'll try to keep it as coherent as possible:
Beto. Beto. Beto. Say what you want about his presidential campaign and ensuing remarks about gun confiscation. Those things don't matter right now. Beto's 2018 Senate campaign completely reignited the Texas Democratic Party in a way that I don't think many outside of Texas understand. Texas flipped purple thanks to Beto. The campaign was incredibly organized and effective, and thus collected a huge amount of voter data. In loss he cultivated a data goldmine for Democrats in Texas. Beto hasn't gone anywhere, either. He's now running PoweredByPeople which is probably the single most effective state-level voter outreach program in the entire country at the moment. They are not explicitly campaigning for Biden but they are generally trying to get people to commit to voting for Democrats down the ballot. This is one of the biggest reasons why it doesn't matter if the Biden campaign spends money in Texas to win it: there's people here doing the work for him.
In 2016, Texas was one of the few red states that was actually less red than 2012. Hillary did the best any Democratic presidential candidate has done here since her husband in 92 and 96, both also years in which Ross Perot received a significant amount of the popular vote here. Before that, you have to go back to Carter in 76. Texas certainly has plenty of your run-of-the-mill MAGA idiots all over the state, but Texas also has a huge amount of "normal" Republicans who do not like Trump. These people live in the sprawling suburbs of Dallas, Houston, Austin and San Antonio. These are the 10% of voters who voted for Beto and Abbott on the same ballot in 2018 (all the love to Lupe Valdez but she was not a good candidate for this state). Not only are more of them going to vote blue this time, there's just more of them. The Texas suburbs are highly sought after and continue to grow at a crazy pace year after year. There's a lot of talk about the Latino vote in the state, and we're trying to turn them out, but the gains Democrats make in Texas are going to come from the massive suburban vote.
State-level activity points to Democrats widely expecting to outperform 2018. 6-7 R held U.S. House seats are in sight, and Democrats are almost definitely going to win 2-3 of those at a minimum while holding on to the two gains from 2018. There is also a major chance the state house flips.
The data. We've all seen the polls. The 538 average is Trump +1 at the moment. Of course no national media outlet wants to be the first one to predict that Texas is going to turn blue, but the data says it's a toss-up. Period. Even Beto at this point was pretty consistently polling behind Cruz - he didn't close the gap until a week or two before the election. Follow that same kind of trend this year, Biden wins, maybe even by a couple points.
Why it matters and should be in the conversation even if Biden ends up losing Texas:
Beto will continue to do the work and if he gets a job someone will pick up in his place. The data and movement isn't going anywhere. The Texas Democratic machine, basically nonexistent before 2018, is going to be set for years to come. This will help flip the state in 2024, 2028, 2032...you get it. As long as the Republican party sticks with Trumpism, Texas is gonna go blue, even if it's not this year. Momentum will hopefully get Dan fucking Patrick out of office in 2022 and at least give Abbott a competitive election (which he's never experienced).
The state house and U.S. House. Flipping the state house means the end of gerrymandering which means a more fair map for the whole state legislature and the congressional seats. Even if Democrats don't win the biggest prize, the Republican lock on the state government is going to be broken.
Texas democrats are alive and well. The suburbs will keep growing and the state will flip within the decade, following the same path as Arizona except with 4x the population.
Democrats have a chance in Texas and there's a lot more at stake there than just the presidency.
