The margin both Democrats won by is larger than the number of remaining ballots. Georgia's Senate races were the two most expensive congressional races ever, with a combined cost of more than $800 million, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. In the past year Atlanta has lost the civil rights giants John Lewis, Joseph Lowery and C.T. Vivian. Warnock, who preaches at Martin Luther King Jr.'s church, has positioned himself as a bearer of their torch. Warnock has called on Congress to restore the Voting Rights Act. He served as chairman of the New Georgia Project, a voting rights group established by Stacey Abrams. Ossoff's lead continues to grow. He's now up by 12,806 votes. That's larger than Biden's victory in the state in November. Warnock's win comes after Republicans relentlessly attacked him as a radical and Marxist. But his win could ultimately give more power to Democratic moderates in a divided Senate. Warnock has just broken a particularly important barrier given the history of the Jim Crow South.

A big win for American Jews – and a big loss for Benjamin Netanyahu. When Warnock came under a disingenuous and misleading attack over his views on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Ossoff offered his full support for the pastor, emphasizing the important distinction between criticizing the Netanyahu government and being anti-Israel. Warnock's critics tried to turn legitimate criticism of Netanyahu's annexationist agenda into some form of antisemitism, while the reverend himself spoke out against the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement and in favor of U.S. military aid to Israel. Ossof, who is likely to become the first ever Jewish senator elected out of Georgia, stood by his side and shot down the cynical accusations. Warnock's embrace of Ossoff was even more crucial for the Democrats' apparent victory. In the November elections, when Republican Senator David Perdue was just a few thousands of votes short of winning more than 50 percent and avoiding a run-off election, Ossoff lagged behind Biden's margins of victory in several Black-majority parts of the state. Going into the run-off election, it was clear that without improving his numbers in the African-American community, Ossoff stood no chance. The joint campaign with Warnock was crucial in getting Ossoff to the benchmarks he needed. The projected Republican losses will make it much harder for Netanyahu to pit one branch of the U.S. government against the other, as he had done before during the Obama and Clinton administrations. He would have to say goodbye to his longed-for consolation prize – a Republican Senate that could work with him against Biden's foreign policy. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi wouldn't repeat the Republican gesture from 2015, when Netanyahu was invited to give a speech before both houses of Congress just two weeks before that year's Israeli election; but who knows, maybe McConnell and Ted Cruz would have passed the "Benjamin and Sara Netanyahu Stop-Iran-From-Gaining-Nuclear-Weapons Act of 2021." The embattled prime minister will now find it much harder to work against Biden in the president-elect's own capital. A few years ago, before all the bad blood of the Obama and Trump presidencies, Netanyahu could at least rest assured that Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer, the leading candidate to become majority leader, is as close to AIPAC as any Republican. But even Schumer, who voted against the Iran deal in 2015 and was an original co-sponsor of the legislation to move the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem, has grown tired of Netanyahu's alliance with the Republican party. He will surely continue to promote military aid to Israel and legislation against BDS, but if Netanyahu is counting on him to help Likud's upcoming election campaign, he is setting himself up for a major disappointment.

Today, Vice President Mike Pence will preside over a Joint Session of both chambers of Congress, which will tally and certify the electors for Joe Biden, finalizing his win in the 2020 Election. Senate and House of Representatives assemble at 1:00 p.m. in a joint session at the Capitol, in the House chamber, to count the electoral votes and declare the results (3 U.S.C. §15). The Vice President presides as President of the Senate. The Vice President opens the certificates and presents them to four tellers, two from each chamber. The tellers read and make a list of the returns. When the votes have been ascertained and counted, the tellers transmit them to the Vice President. If one of the tickets has received a majority of 270 or more electoral votes, the Vice President announces the results, which "shall be deemed a sufficient declaration of the persons, if any, elected President and Vice President." While the tellers announce the results, Members may object to the returns from any individual state as they are announced. Objections to individual state returns must be made in writing by at least one Member each of the Senate and House of Representatives. If an objection meets these requirements, the joint session recesses and the two houses separate and debate the question in their respective chambers for a maximum of two hours. The two houses then vote separately to accept or reject the objection. They then reassemble in joint session, and announce the results of their respective votes. An objection to a state's electoral vote must be approved by both houses in order for any contested votes to be excluded.

The most difficult and important is to overhaul social media. We need federal data ownership legislation mirrored after the CPRA in California. There should be ad-free versions of every platform. Section 230 should be amended to not include content that is amplified by algorithm. The basic problem is that social media creators and companies are rewarded for having more extreme and untrue content. The goal should be to change or balance the incentives. Tech, government, media and NGOs need to collaborate on this to support fact-supported journalism. The big tech companies are essentially quasi-governments unto themselves at this point - the problem is their decisions are driven by maximizing ad revenue, user engagement and profit growth. That's not the set of incentives you want when deciding what millions regard as truth. Our government is hopelessly behind on tech. Legislators haven't had guidance since 1995 when they got rid of the Office of Technology Assessment. The average Senator is 62. Speeches won't do much against trillions of dollars of financial incentives.
