Arizona Democrats hope to position themselves to retake the majority in the state's House of Representatives for the first time in nearly 60 years while Republicans face a series of intraparty disputes over party identity. At the state level, in Arizona's 15th Legislative District, Senate incumbent Heather Carter is competing against challenger Nancy Barto after being criticized for her support of LGBT rights and her role in delaying passage of the state's budget in 2019. In Arizona's 6th Congressional District, four Democratic candidates are competing for a chance to run against Republican Representative David Schweikert, who has been in the news lately for a series of ethics violations related to the misuse of campaign funds. At the state-level, Democratic candidate for Senate Mark Kelly is unchallenged, and Republican incumbent Martha McSally is facing off against challenger Daniel McCarthy.
Kansas has been the focus of a significant amount of attention from both parties in the weeks leading up to today's election. On the Republican side of the ticket, former Secretary of State Kris Kobach looks to win his party's nomination for Senate, despite concerns about his vulnerability against likely-challenger Democrat Barbra Bollier in November. Last week, Mitch McConnell and other Senate Republicans pushed President Donald Trump to endorse Kobach's opponent, Representative Roger Marshall, but were unsuccessful in their attempts. In Kansas' 30th Legislative District, voters will be selecting between Democrats Melissa Gregory and Amy Lyon as candidates to replace retiring Kansas Senate President Susan Wagle. Long-time Republican Representative Fred Upton of the 6th Congressional District faces a challenge from Elena Oelke after winning his 2018 primary by a margin of less than 5%.
Missouri voters will be voting for politicians and policies in their state's primary. In Missouri's 1st Congressional District, incumbent Democrat Representative William Lacy Clay is facing a challenge from Cori Bush, who seeks to end Clay's 20-year tenure in office. Statewide voters will decide whether or not to expand Medicaid and which Democratic Attorney General candidate, Elad Gloss or Rich Finnian, will face Republican incumbent Eric Schmit in November. Republican Governor Mike Parson - appointed to the position in 2018 following the resignation of Eric Greitens - aims to secure his party's nomination for November's race against a field of Democratic challengers, currently led by State Auditor Nicole Galloway.
Washington voters will be participating in the state's "top-two" primary, in which candidates from all parties compete for the two spots on November's ballot, regardless of party. 35 gubernatorial candidates are running against incumbent Democrat Jay Inslee, and 12 candidates are running for the Lieutenant Governor seat after Cyrus Habib decided to step down earlier this year. Voters will also be selecting candidates for Washington's 10th Congressional District's House of Representative seat following the retirement of Democrat Danny Heck, and Republicans will be selecting their candidate in the 8th Congressional District, hoping to win back a seat they lost to Democrat Kim Schrier in 2018.

How Ballot Initiatives Changed the Game on Medicaid Expansion: Missouri is the latest state where a nonprofit has helped put the issue before voters, bypassing Republican officials. And the vote is today. Most Republican governors and legislatures had little interest in expanding the reach of the Affordable Care Act, and declined the money. After the initiatives pass, governors often delay, alter or outright refuse implementation. Some have even changed the ballot initiative process, making it harder to secure spots, after seeing a Medicaid ballot succeed. Governor LePage of Maine said he “would go to jail” before expanding Medicaid. The program did not start enrolling members until the state elected a new governor, Janet Mills, a Democrat, in 2018. Utah’s government added a provision that Medicaid enrollees had to work, volunteer or search for work to secure coverage, a restriction not in the original ballot. Nebraska began enrolling patients into its Medicaid expansion only this month, nearly two years after the ballot passed. It also added a work requirement, although both it and Utah have suspended those rules during the pandemic. “Even after the people pass it, they still fight it,” Senator Morfeld said. Missouri will vote on a Medicaid ballot initiative today. If passed, it would extend coverage to an estimated 217,000 people. Gov. Mike Parson, a Republican, opposes the ballot initiative and has argued that it will harm a state budget that is already under strain because of the pandemic.

For years, the GOP has waged its health-care fight almost solely in opposition to ObamaCare. But lately, Republicans have been testing a more affirmative case for their American Health Care Act: by dividing people who deserve health care from those who don't.
Take White House budget chief Mick Mulvaney, who recently defended AHCA's watering-down of ObamaCare's protections for pre-existing conditions, assuring that the Republican bill provides "plenty of money" to treat cancer patients, but "[t]hat doesn't mean we should take care of the person who sits at home, eats poorly, and gets diabetes."
Mulvaney tries to drive a wedge between those struck by illness through no fault of their own, and those chided for courting their own plight. This echoes an earlier statement by Rep. Mo Brooks (R-Ala.), who admitted that the benefits — and sympathies — of the AHCA flow to "people who lead good lives, they're healthy, they've done the things to keep their bodies healthy, and right now, those are the people who have done things the right way that are seeing their costs skyrocketing." Brooks' implication, of course, is that people of ill health — who have not led "good lives" — are unworthy of affordable health care.

So why do Republican elites train Republican voters to believe this? Money, essentially. While having a healthier and more productive workforce would help the macro economy, rich elites would lose significant power over their workers and would be taxed at higher rates. The health care industry is also making a killing from our system, and they're generous donors.
One effect of this system is job lock. People become dependent on their employment for their health insurance, and they are loath to leave their jobs, even when doing so might make their lives better. They are afraid that market exchange coverage might not be as good as what they have (and they’re most likely right). They’re afraid if they retire, Medicare won’t be as good (they’re right, too). They’re afraid that if the Affordable Care Act is repealed, they might not be able to find affordable insurance at all.

On January 5, following a briefing by IC leadership on Russian hacking during the 2016 Presidential election, President Obama had a brief follow-on conversation with FBI Director Jim Comey and Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates in the Oval Office. Vice President Biden and I were also present.
President Obama began the conversation by stressing his continued commitment to ensuring that every aspect of this issue is handled by the Intelligence and law enforcement communities "by the book". The President stressed that he is not asking about, initiating or instructing anything from a law enforcement perspective. He reiterated that our law enforcement team needs to proceed as it normally would by the book.
From a national security perspective, however, President Obama said he wants to be sure that, as we engage with the incoming team, we are mindful to ascertain if there is any reason that we cannot share information fully as it relates to Russia.
Director Comey affirmed that he is proceeding "by the book" as it relates to law enforcement. From a national security perspective, Comey said that he does have some concerns that incoming NSA Flynn is speaking frequently with Russian Ambassador Kislyak. Comey said that could be an issue as it relates to sharing sensitive information. President Obama asked if Comey was saying that the NSC should not pass sensitive information related to Russia to Flynn. Comey replied "potentially." He added that he has no indication thus far that Flynn has passed classified information to Kislyak, but he noted that "the level of communication is unusual."
The President asked Comey to inform him if anything changes in the next few weeks that should affect how we share classified information with the incoming team. Comey said he would.

The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional gender roles are made more rigid. Opposition to abortion is high, as is homophobia and anti-gay legislation and national policy.
6 Controlled Mass Media
Sometimes the media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation, or sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Censorship, especially in war time, is very common.
7 Obsession with National Security
Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses.
8 Religion and Government are Intertwined
Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed to the government's policies or actions.
9 Corporate Power is Protected
The industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite.
10 Labor Power is Suppressed
Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely, or are severely suppressed.
11 Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts
Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education, and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts is openly attacked, and governments often refuse to fund the arts.
12 Obsession with Crime and Punishment
Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses and even forego civil liberties in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations.
13 Rampant Cronyism and Corruption
Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders.
14 Fraudulent Elections
Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against or even assassination of opposition candidates, use of legislation to control voting numbers or political district boundaries, and manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections.
