During the 2019 season it was suspected that the Astros were cheating. The other team they knocked out of the playoffs, the New York Yankees, brought these allegations to the Commissioner but they were swept under the rug. The Commissioner is a spineless piece of shit who cared more about avoiding a PR nightmare than the integrity of the game. Rob Manfred is a disgrace. But I digress. The Astros had an elaborate cheating system. They placed cameras in the outfield aimed directly at the opposing team’s catcher, and relayed the live video feed to their dugout — the dugout is the area off to the side where the team hangs out when they’re not playing the field, where the water coolers are kept, the way to the locker room, etc. So anyway, in the dugout, a TV was set up with the live feed of the opposing team’s catcher. A person would watch the video feed in real time, and decipher which pitch was coming next. He would then either blow a whistle, bang loudly on a trash can with a bat, or otherwise get the message to the batter so that the batter would know exactly what pitch was coming next. Another way they would let the batter know which pitch was coming involved one of the Bull Pen catchers (the guys who catch balls for pitchers in the Bull Pen when they warm up before they go out onto the field). The Bull Pen is visible from home plate, so when the Astros hitters were up at the plate, they would simply look at the Bull Pen, which is in the outfield in Minute Maid Park, and know which pitch was coming based on whether the guy had one arm up on the fence, two arms up, or both arms down. It was also rumored and suspected and there was some evidence that Jose Altuve wore a buzzer underneath his jersey which would buzz once for fastball, twice for off-speed pitch, etc. though this was never proven. Not only did Altuve win MVP with this cheating method, but the Astros cheated their way to beating the Dodgers in the World Series and knocked off the Yankees along the way. They also arguably ruined or derailed several pitchers’ careers by making them look like hot garbage. The Commissioner granted all these players immunity from punishment because, as I mentioned earlier, he is both a spineless piece of shit and a disgrace. The club received a measly $5 million fine and none of the players received so much as a slap on the wrist. The Dodgers justifiably feel wronged, and the result is what you see here: the Dodgers pitcher throwing with intent to injure. It is one of the only ways they will be able to get back at these “people” from Houston. I hesitate to even use the word people for these pathetic examples of human life. None of the Astros apologized, in fact they all insist they had every right to cheat and there was nothing wrong with cheating and they will continue to cheat.

Why preachy vegans (like me) are essential to the movement. I think many of us know the feeling of being afraid to speak up in the fear of being cast off as preachy, angry, and annoying. I’m not telling you guys to go full Gary Yourofsky and tell people they should die for drinking milk, but simply passively leading by positive example should not be touted as the most effective method of activism. One of my biggest grapples of the stereotype is why being being preachy is okay and respected when it comes to racial inequality, gender issues, anti-Israelism (which IS antisemitism....) and literally any other issue but not animal rights? Is it because confronting animal rights directly affects our own lifestyles and points out our moral inconsistencies? Vegans who look down on “preachy vegans” should reflect on what they’re fighting for, animal rights (and the environment and human health and planetary health) or to appease their social status. But of course it isn’t black and white, and acting out of fiery passion is not always the answer as well.

The extra room around the court has been extremely useful. Much safer for the players. Players are using the space to run back up the floor, to make better plays by jumping out of bounds since there's no cameraman along the baseline or courtside seats, the NBA has installed an olympic-track and field like camera along the entire sideline which gives a breathtaking view of the game. And coaches also have more room to gesticulate and run around along their own sideline. Even the Refs also have more room to do their job along the baseline. The Caruso steal which was arguably the best defensive play of the game may not have been possible or he may have been unwilling to attempt the recovery had the baseline been full of cameramen and fans. Look how much fucking room he needed after he landed to pull off the move. He'd be in the stands at that point during normal conditions. The virus is out of control in our country. We need a national policy to wear masks in all indoor public places, close down places where you can't wear masks indoors (dining), and ban any large gatherings without masks. We need to do that today. Right now.
Other countries that have successfully reopened schools have had very low amounts of virus in the population at large. Low meaning 1 new case per day per 100,000 people. And, they remain focused on keeping it low. We are not there in much of the US. Many states have 25 or more.
There are more positive COVID-19 tests today from the #STLCards in their preliminary testing but the exact number won’t be known until tonight. They remain quarantined in Milwaukee. Their next scheduled game is Tuesday in Detroit.
