Light News Mon/Tues/Wed/Thurs/Fri/Sat/Sun

"Defund the police," without qualification, was a really dumb slogan to adopt. I realize it's hard to fault a movement of people for a thing, but I wish more people had the foresight to realize how quickly that premise was going to be a problem to defend. Something like "reform the police," or, "rebuild the police," would have been much more effective and easier to explain.

Reform the police is popular. Demilitarize the police is wrongly popular because the public are legally allowed to buy the same military gear and weaponry the police have, right-wing and alt-right groups not only have stockpiles of military gear+weaponry but have extensive training in using that gear and weaponry. Some eco-alt-left groups do as well but they don't use the gear the same way, they strictly target industrial infrastructure.

You would think everyone learned their lesson after the rightfully and thankfully metoo movement had their slogan used to attack them, that maybe an extreme slogan without any qualifiers maybe a bad idea. "Reform the police" would have been slightly better. I bet the Republicans is licking their chops to "defund the police" and replace them with private police forces like blackwater and paramilitary.

Defunding the police would be counter-productive. You can use it as a incentive to make departments conform to needed changes. But just to take the money away will only invite more problems and shittier cops. They are already under-paid. There are already not enough police. Police are already overworked and underweaponed. I do not hate the police. I hate the racism and the racists. Do not do to police the very thing we hate the most. Judging all people of one kind, by the actions of a minority. The key issues is accountability. There needs to be some very significant changes to make this happen. End or reform the Qualified Immunity doctrine. Make not only the offending officer answer and face consequences, by the ones that stand by and say nothing, and their superiors as well. Much more extensive training and periodic reviews are needed. Right now it take less training to be a cop than it does to be a hair dresser. This is how we end this problem. Not by scraping the entire system.

It's like the car breaking down and your solution is to get rid of it. That solves nothing. No different than Republicans saying, "there are welfare leechers to eliminate welfare".

Sadly the far left, and I’m talking about like the folks that are as far as you can possibly go, think we can just get rid of police, private healthcare companies, big banks, pharma companies, etc and everyone will be happy and have a livable income and all racism and crime stops.

Use logic, use reality and use common sense. When your solution is all or nothing, you usually end up with nothing.

Joe Biden crushed the entire Democratic field. He is a good candidate and is polling well. It's not what I expected eighteen months ago but it seems hard to dispute at this point.

SPOT ON: “As his criminal justice proposal made clear months ago, Vice President Biden does not believe that police should be defunded,” spokesman Andrew Bates said in a statement. Biden has called for an additional $300 million for community policing as well as funding for body cameras to be worn by police. He still supports strengthening the alternative measures that people wanting to defund the police do, but he opposes defunding as a means of paying for those enhanced systems. Considering that he is aiming for a national office and police can vary widely from region to region, his stance is perfectly reasonable. And only mentally ill deranged pro-crime terrorists support "defunding" the police.

Satellite data suggests coronavirus may have hit China earlier | Researchers say surge in cars at hospitals may indicate outbreak in fall. |  Dramatic spikes in auto traffic around major hospitals in Wuhan last fall suggest the novel coronavirus may have been present and spreading through central China long before the outbreak was first reported to the world, according to a new Harvard Medical School study. Using techniques similar to those employed by intelligence agencies, the research team behind the study analyzed commercial satellite imagery and "observed a dramatic increase in hospital traffic outside five major Wuhan hospitals beginning late summer and early fall 2019," according to Dr. John Brownstein, the Harvard Medical professor who led the research.  https://abcnews.go.com/International/satellite-data-suggests-coronavirus-hit-china-earlier-researchers/story?id=71123270

Did we really expect anything less than lies, deflection, and propaganda at this briefing though?

YEP, THANK YOU: Native Americans want to be included in race talks | A May report from the APM Research Lab found that the COVID-19 mortality rate for black Americans is 2.4 times higher than for white Americans. While the report acknowledged "limited and uneven data" regarding Indigenous populations, it stated that in New Mexico, which contains portions of the Navajo Nation, the Indigenous mortality rate is eight times as high as the white mortality rate. Rep. Barbara Bessette (D-Great Falls), a Chippewa Cree tribal member, said, like coronavirus, she views systemic racism as a public health crisis. "Minority communities have high health disparities, economic injustice and inadequate housing. This isn't about just one incident but a myriad of things. What's happening now is symptomatic of a much deeper 'disease,'" she told the Great Falls Tribune. As Floyd's death sparks an anti-racism movement, some Native Americans wonder if they will be included in conversations of injustice and change. Indian Education for All Instructional Coach Jordann Lankford said that while the growing movement provides an opportunity to discuss inequity, she is disappointed that other minorities have been excluded from the dialogue. "I fear people in Montana will see these things and see the riots and think, 'Well, that really doesn't affect Montana because we don't have a big black population here.' But it's not just a black and white issue — racial inequity affects all minority groups, and it needs to be an open dialogue, including everyone," she said. Craig Falcon, a Blackfeet tribal member who is running for council in Seville District No. 7, said that when it comes to conversations about racism, American Indians are often treated "like the forgotten stepchild of the family that no one likes." "The African American population often gets the spotlight on racism, but our struggle is very similar," Falcon said. "We also deal with racism on a daily basis, so this touches home for us, too. Native Americans are often dehumanized and portrayed as savages. It seems like we get forgotten because America is ashamed, or embarrassed about its treatment of us." | "This country is quite literally founded on stolen lands and the conquering of many peoples, thousands of tribes. But we have a small population; we don't have a large representation in media. As individuals and culturally, we are not as vocal. We haven't had a Dr. (Martin Luther) King or a Dr. Cornel West. We've had other scholars, activists and educators, but our voice is much smaller," he said. | He remembers the ransacking of the Bureau of Indian Affairs building, the burning of a courthouse in South Dakota and protests at Wounded Knee in the 1970s. He also attended Stewart Indian School, which, along with other boarding schools in the country, punished students for embracing their cultural identity. It's hard for Morris to reconcile new anti-racist movements with past injustices. He often wonders where the protesters were when he was fighting for equality. "We've had the Indian Removal Act, Trail of Tears, ethnic cleansing and genocide. This man didn't deserve to die, and it's very tragic, but where were these people when we needed them to stand?" he said. "Indigenous women, men and children go missing and are murdered every day ... where's the outrage for them? Where's the outrage for the generational trauma that people are still dealing with on reservations? We're still being forgotten."

The Village People order Trump to stop playing 'Macho Man' and 'YMCA' at rallies
https://www.independent.co.uk//arts-entertainment/music/news/village-people-trump-macho-man-ymca-rallies-tweet-a9556251.html

Ah yes. YMCA. A song written to celebrate having a safe place where marginalized, abandoned young people can meet up. I can't imagine a less appropriate song for a Trump rally. What a perfect song to play at republican gatherings. This was my first thought as well. These people don’t even realize the symbolism behind the music they pick. To them, it’s just “catchy upbeat song #37”. Right wingers are famously incapable of analyzing art or understanding subtext. They thought the Colbert Report was serious. They thought Fight Club was pro-toxic masculinity. They think Bioshock is a video game about how cool libertarianism is. They think Fortunate Son is patriotic. Paul Ryan's favorite band was fucking Rage Against the Machine. Being a right winger in the 21st century seems to require a complete inability to understand the message of any media that you consume.

I've always believed in the power of storytelling to bridge cultural divides, to get readers to empathize with people they've never met, to help readers understand issues on an emotional level in a way that history textbooks can't. To me, art is the greatest weapon against ignorance.
Then I look at white supremacists and I think, "How do they not get that they are the Death Eaters!?" "Didn't they have to read 1984 in high school!?" "Did they watch Avatar and think, 'That Princess Azula's onto something!' " I literally cannot imagine living in today's media-obsessed culture and choosing to hate minorities. It's like an entire party is suffering from brain damage .It is so strange that this is the case. Every single conservative I know can't look past the surface level of literally any work of art.

Damn good for nothing hippie liberals... hey can I use your music real quick?

Trump is an Elton John fan and Elton John also told him to stop playing his music at rallies.

In all seriousness, the irony of popular songs played at Republican events that are the anthesis of Republican ideology while the willful ignorance to subtext un lue of the simplistic words really is on brand for Republicans.

Village People: Macho Man
Elton John: "Candle In The Wind," "Rocket Man," "Tiny Dancer," and "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting"
The Beatles: "Hey Jude"
Neil Young: "Rockin' in the Free World"
Queen: We will Rock You

Just those bands alone and who they are are almost opposites of the Republicans, but boy do they love to co-opt popular music of people they loath.

Bernie Sanders pushes back on idea of abolishing police departments | Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) distanced himself from the idea of abolishing or defunding police departments in a wide-ranging interview with the New Yorker published Tuesday, instead calling for more training and higher pay for officers as part of sweeping criminal justice reform. | "Do I think we should not have police departments in America? No, I don’t. There’s no city in the world that does not have police departments." | "What you need are — I didn't call for more money for police departments. I called for police departments that have well-educated, well-trained, well-paid professionals." | "And, too often around this country right now, you have police officers who take the job at very low payment, don't have much education, don't have much training—and I want to change that." | Sanders called for the "transformation of police departments" that pares back the responsibilities of officers as it relates to dealing with mental health or addiction issues. | Sanders said the issue of police brutality needs to be addressed in "a very, very aggressive way, pointing to a set of proposals he sent to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) last week that seeks to establish independent police conduct review boards for departments and lower the standard for prosecuting officers. | We've got to start investing in education and jobs, not more jails, not more incarceration, and we have to hold every police officer in this country accountable for what he or she does. And when those police officers break the law and commit acts of murder or violence, they have got to be held accountable." | "I think we want to redefine what police departments do, give them the support they need to make their jobs better defined. So I do believe that we need well-trained, well-educated, and well-paid professionals in police departments." | "Anyone who thinks that we should abolish all police departments in America, I don't agree."

I don’t have a problem with anyone who supported someone else in the primary for policy reasons or because they thought we needed new blood. Those are legitimate reasons. But the smears on Joe’s character that came from within the party were and still are difficult to stomach. He is and always has been a fundamentally decent person, imperfect like all of us, but possessed of a compassion for others that informs his decision making and allows him to learn from his mistakes. That’s exactly the type of person we need in the White House to steer us back in the right direction.

I didn't support him in the beginning but it's powerful to me as well. He has empathy. He listens, and I mean he really listens. He doesn't just pretend. He cares. Of course sadly he knows loss all too well. NOBODY should ever have to bury a child, it's the most awful thing I can imagine. May the family of George Floyd find peace and meaning somehow. What a dreadful thing to happen to anyone.

I like that Joe went first. Traditionally the most prestigious speaker goes last. Joe gave the spotlight to the people who actually represent George Floyd’s community. That means something.

Just abandon this ludicrous "defund the police" slogan which is a massive gift to Trump. Even Bernie is not reckless enough to touch this drivel.

Georgia Legislature Announces Investigation Into Widespread Reports of ‘Election Irregularities’

Rebuild and reform policing is probably a better way to quickly explain the movement. "Reform the police" sounds great. Everybody can get behind that. "Reinvent the police" is a good one that I've heard too. "Defunding" and "abolishing" are just turning a great idea into bad messaging.

There are center right and independent voters who support police reform, but can be turned away by rhetoric like "defund the police" and "abolish the police". If you want to build a coalition that can make lasting change, winning over these people is extremely helpful and such rhetoric just pushes them into the arms of the Republicans. There's no need to fight on such a rhetorical hill, especially when it doesn't accurately describe what people are calling for and requires constant explaining about what they actually mean.

In the sociological sense, recuperation is the process by which politically radical ideas and images are twisted, co-opted, absorbed, defused, incorporated, annexed and commodified within media culture and bourgeois society, and thus become interpreted through a neutralized, innocuous or more socially conventional perspective.[1][2][3] More broadly, it may refer to the cultural appropriation of any subversive works or ideas by mainstream culture. It is the opposite of détournement, in which images and other cultural artifacts are appropriated from mainstream sources and repurposed with radical intentions. The concept of recuperation was formulated by members of the Situationist International, its first published instance in 1960.[4] The term conveys a negative connotation because recuperation generally bears the intentional consequence (whether perceived or not) of fundamentally altering the meanings behind radical ideas due to their appropriation or being co-opted into the dominant discourse.

Nobody believes Goodell is doing this for the right reasons, but the fact that he sees this as in his interest is telling. Just read somewhere they are thinking about replacing Goodell. Looks like some people can't handle the truth, most likely the owners. The owners are mostly white republican scum. Goodell himself has said that he'd retire at the end of his current contract which extends through 2023. I think the news of the owners vetting a replacement is just firing back up as a shit-stirring narrative. They probably should be vetting a replacement this far out considering how much stake they have in the league doing well. Goodell has made them an absolute shit ton of money and blasted off NFL's popularity since he became the Commissioner in 2006. I'm sure the owners are collectively unhappy with Goodell pulling the rug out from under them on this, but I can't imagine it'll result in an ousting.

NAACP president declines to endorse ‘defund police’ movement
https://nypost.com/2020/06/09/naacp-president-not-endorsing-defund-the-police-movement/

In 1948, after World War II, the U.S. provided Western Europe with over $15 billion in aid. That is what is called the Marshall Plan. Since 1949, the Palestinians have received enough aid for some 30 Marshall Plans. Even in the late 1960s, the PA had already received more than enough aid to climb up the economic ladder. One would think all the anti-Israel racists would inquire about why little has changed for the Palestinians and where the money is going; especially if said organization has taken upon itself to wade into the Israeli/Palestinian issue.
https://www.unrwa.org/how-you-can-help/government-partners/funding-trends/donor-charts

Among the black civil rights leaders, those who are anti-Israel tend to see a similarity between their struggle and the Palestinian struggle. Beside the fact that the notion is absolutely false, it is intentional. Arab leaders have sought to hijack black narratives to legitimize their cause since the 60s. That is why Mahmoud Abbas refers to Israel as “racist,” and compares it to the Jim Crow laws America used to have. Such a propaganda campaign is only effective amongst the “color consumed.” If one is color consumed, all Israel’s enemies have to do is to get them to see Israel as a country of white Europeans. Virtually nothing else has to be done; the color consumed will fill in the blanks with that very bias. It’s why Mahmoud Abbas, president of the Palestinian Authority, calls Israel an “apartheid state,” though nothing in Israel resembles apartheid. To the black South African with unresolved hurt and bitterness from apartheid, not much else needs to be said.
https://blogs.timesofisrael.com/7-reasons-why-the-black-struggle-for-freedom-and-the-palestinian-crisis-are-absolutely-nothing-alike-by-a-black-man-whos-sick-and-tired-of-the-comparisons/

Fast-forward to the present day: the Movement for Black Lives (M4BL) is one of the major partners of Black Lives Matter. In their policy platforms, they have an “invest-divest” section which, under “cut military expenditures,” it mentions Israel as a apartheid, genocidal regime that routinely arrest 4 year-old Palestinians. All lies, but they have taken their cue straight out of the SNCC playbook; a playbook, if one remembers, of out of unresearched and unverified libels and antisemitic stereotypes written by someone who had previous personal ties to Palestinians. From its beginning, BLM had an anti-Israel bias. From their earliest moments, “From Ferguson to Palestine” was a slogan taken up immediately following Michael Brown’s killing by officer Darren Wilson. The slogan read “From Ferguson to Palestine – Occupation is a Crime.” This feigned support is nothing more than a calculated effort by Palestinian leaders to divert attention away from how they are oppressing their people. And we know now that this is nothing new.

What adds insult to injury is that BLM does seek allyship from the Jewish community, so long as they are diametrically opposed to the Jewish state. Jewish people should not be expected to check their Zionism at the door in order to join arms with BLM. Jews should not be expected to do that, no more than a Kenyan should be expected to denounce Kenya, or a Brazilian be expected to denounce South America. Can black Americans even imagine joining a Filipino justice movement only to be asked to voice our denunciation of the civil rights movement in order to join? No. We would not. Imagine a justice movement for black South Africans that, despite having good people on the ground who may be unaware of the movement’s national positions, posited that slavery was voluntary, and that West Africans got on ships because they were excited to come to America and be worked to death. There is no scenario where a black American, upon finding this out, would be a part of such movement. It is mind boggling to fathom why anyone would expect anyone else to do the same.

Major Fuel Spill in Russia’s North Spreads Toward Arctic Ocean | A diesel spill has released about half as much petroleum into the environment as the Exxon Valdez tanker accident in Alaska. The fuel is flowing toward the Arctic Ocean. Floating barriers hastily laid across rivers in the far north of Russia have failed to contain a major diesel fuel spill that has now spread to a lake near the Arctic Ocean and is threatening a nature reserve, a regional governor said Tuesday. The environmental disaster is unfolding far to the north of the Arctic Circle, in a marshy wilderness near the isolated mining city of Norilsk. Diesel fuel spilled from a tank that burst last week after settling into permafrost that had stood firm for years but gave way during a warm spring, Russian officials said. The accident, which environmental groups have compared to the Exxon Valdez tanker spill in Alaska in 1989, has highlighted the risks of industrial development in the thawing Arctic, where climate change is warming the environment at a rate about twice as fast as the rest of the Earth. The spill released about 150,000 barrels of diesel into a river, compared with about 260,000 barrels of crude oil released into Prince William Sound during the Exxon tanker accident, a touchstone for environmental damage from petroleum spills.

The primaries still matter because it's all about getting as many pro-democrat delegates as possible represented at all the local/state/national democratic party conventions. Bernie is no longer viable, he's not even meeting the threshold to qualify for delegates, the number of Sanders delegates represented at the local/state/national level will be minimal, they won't have any influence on policy-making, and they will be dismissed as a delegate if they attack Biden or other Democrats. The results also prove Biden was broad support. Last time, Trump was merely a candidate, Democrats controlled the government, 99% of voters dismissed all the anti-Trump warnings as Democratic hype. With Trump president and Republicans in control, voters have pivoted hard to Democrats.

The leading contender, Jon Ossoff, earned national attention when he nearly flipped a House seat in a 2017 special election. If no candidate clears 50 percent of the vote, there will be a runoff. He's at 48.6% with several hundred precints and plenty of absentee ballots left to count.

Georgia says 96% of ballots that were requested were delivered. Voters and local officials report many people did not receive them so they showed up in person (which means they have to vote with a provisional ballot and provisional ballots are almost always never counted). Vendor used by state says they sent out 100% of ballots. What happened? No one seems to know. What happened yesterday in Georgia is what Reublicans wants in November. Best of both worlds. Suppression of urban and minority vote to help them win. And enough confusion and chaos to allow them to question legitimacy of the count if they lose. Imagine an election meltdown like today's in Georgia, except in November (with twice the turnout rate), in a state poised to tip the presidential race & where non-white turnout is poised to decide the winner.

House Judiciary Committee Oversight Hearing on Policing Practices and Law Enforcement Accountability: Anyone else disgusted that Matt Gaetz sits on this committee? “But as it turns out, notoriety is about the worst consequence Gaetz, now 31, has faced from the DUI arrest. He didn't have his license suspended for a year when he refused the breath test — as Florida law dictates. And he didn't have that refusal used against him in a criminal proceeding. Charges against Gaetz were dismissed after events that included, among other things, the forced resignation of the arresting officer.” Not defending Gaetz whatsoever, but the police officer involved was later forced to resign after choking someone in a completely different incident and his fellow officers saying it was excessive force.

Trump's campaign is demanding CNN retract and apologize for a recent poll that showed him well behind presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden. The demand, coming in the form of a cease and desist letter to CNN President Jeff Zucker, was immediately rejected by the network. "We stand by our poll," said Matt Dornic, a CNN spokesman. The CNN poll conducted by SSRS and released on Monday shows Trump trailing the former vice president by 14 points, 55%-41%, among registered voters. It also finds Trump's approval rating at 38% -- his worst mark since January 2019, and roughly on par with approval ratings for one-term Presidents Jimmy Carter and George H.W. Bush at this point in their reelection years -- and his disapproval rating at 57%.

Lion cubs legs were purposely broken so he could not escape while tourists took selfies | A lion cub which was exploited by its abusers and used as a photo prob for paying tourists has to be taught to walk again after its hind legs were deliberately broken by torturers so it couldn’t run away. | Local reports stated that Simba’s health was declining rapidly because of the excessive beatings and torture he endured. He also suffered severe injuries to his spine and hips. | Although Simba’s life has been saved he has been left with permanent deformities and his abusers are yet to face any consequences for the abuse and torture they subjected the young lion cub to.

At the end of March, the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act, or CARES Act, set aside $8 billion for tribes. But the money came with restrictions. It can only be used to cover expenses that are "incurred due to the public health emergency."  | Navajo President Jonathan Nez says the way to address this public health emergency is to make sure people can wash their hands with clean running water. "Over 30% of our Navajo people don't have running water," Nez says. "If there is a second surge or any future pandemics, it's very critical that we begin to plan for the future." | The Treasury Department is giving tribes until the end of the year to spend the money. But building water lines takes time. "It's literally impossible to have it completed," says Jason John, who manages the Navajo Nation Department of Water Resources. John says each step must be approved by the tribal council and its federal counterparts. "Building water lines just to get it to construction, to bid it out and select the construction company that process takes between two to two and a half years alone," John says. "And then construction after that could take a year to a year and a half." | But building water lines is just the beginning. Navajo Council Delegate Amber Kanazbah Crotty says many basic needs on the Navajo Nation could help combat the coronavirus — electricity, more hospitals, doctors and nurses, better housing, broadband, grocery stores, agriculture and economic development. The Navajo Nation has the highest coronavirus infection rate per capita in the country.

David Bowie has some questions and criticisms about MTV’s lack of videos featuring black artists in this 1983 interview with Mark Goodman. Two years before, Bowie had been one of the faces of the network's "I want my MTV" debut promotion.  Here, the role of interviewer and interviewee switch when Bowie ask VJ Mark Goodman why the station didn't play more black artists. A defensive Goodman tries to explain programming: "We have to try and do not just what we think New York and Los Angeles will appreciate, but also Poughkeepsie or the Midwest, pick some town in the Midwest that will be scared to death by Prince (who we're playing) or a string of black faces and black music." "That's very interesting; isn't that interesting?" Bowie responds. Goodman continues: "We have to play the music that an entire country is going to like." Falling back into the then-official reason MTV used for not playing black artists (it's a "rock and roll" station), Goodman wonders what a group like the Isley Brothers or Spinners would mean to a 17-year-old. Bowie seizes on that notion to ask, "I tell you what the Isley Bros or Marvin Gaye mean to a BLACK 17-year-old -- and surely he's part of America as well." Goodman agrees. Calling Goodman's POV as "rampant" (negative/racist) in American media, Bowie asks,"Should it not be the challenge to try and make the media far more integrated, especially, if anything in musical terms?" Goodman says it's happening; MTV's now playing more white groups that have a black sound! The look on Bowie's face: Priceless. Ironically, within weeks of this exchange, MTV is playing Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean"; nothing would ever be the same.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XZGiVzIr8Qg

Was there an overnight conversion or, was it, as the story goes, that CBS (Jackson's label) threatened to pull all their videos unless MTV played Michael Jackson. So, how does this nearly 40-year old interview help explain systemic racism?

Because Goodman would never consider himself racist (and no reason to believe he is), but he admits that decisions were being made that intentionally excluded black artists due to the existence of racist sentiments  SOMEWHERE: They could be as close as Poughkeepsie (N.Y.) or as far as "some town in the Midwest" with residents who are scared, not of black music, per se, but "black FACES." As we would say today, this is saying the quiet part out loud. This is an example of an institution (corporation), acting in its financial self-interest using the existence of racism as its rationale.

Now, take that and expand it, because it's not a unique occurrence. Famed comic book writer and editor Jim Shooter, who broke into the medium as 13-year-old tried to introduce a black character into DC's Legion of Superheroes (which had green, orange and other-hue beings) in 1965. His editor shut it down, because of fears of Southern markets not taking the book. This fear kept DC from even putting a black character on a cover for years. Point being, once you get enough individuals OR "institutions" (independently) acting in a way that is exclusionary to someone of another race, not because that individual or institution is racist but because of an awareness that racism somewhere else will have a deleterious impact on that organization's bottom line (revenue), that is systemic racism.

It's fair to say, well, 1965 was 55 years ago. '83 was 37 years ago. Times have changed a whole lot. True. For one, the culture IS far more diverse (too much so, some might say). But, let's go to the end of the Bowie interview; Goodman discusses differences in eras: "It's not like it was in '67, when you'd say, 'I'm not into that, but you are and that's cool.' Now, it's, 'You're into that? I don't like YOU.' And that's scary." Want to know what's scary? How much those words perfectly fit today's temperament.

The good news is that deaths remain well below their peak. It's not clear why that is:
1. Could be because deaths lag infections (i.e. they'll begin increasing later)
2. Could be that new cases are hitting mostly younger populations
3. Could be that better treatments are helping
